Old Wykehamist Chapel Choir Society

On Saturday 20 May the inaugural Evensong sung by the newly formed Society took place in College Chapel with the sun streaming down through the stained-glass.

The gathering contained many former Quiristers and Old Pilgrims', so the bass and tenor lines raised the roof in the final hymn. Dr. Hester Jones, Dean of Chapel at Winchester College, gave a very warm welcome to everyone present: they came from Austria to Scotland and everywhere in between; from university students to those many decades on from that experience, to relive the happy memories of making great music and great friendships in Chapel Choir.

Conductor Christopher Tolley had put together just the sort of repertoire everyone used to love to sing: Stanford, Walmisley, Rose and Brahms. The top line was splendidly provided by wives, friends and two girl choristers from the Cathedral, sisters of present Quiristers, so the link between the two Foundations was most happily consolidated. Tea and cakes were very kindly provided by Winchester College Society. The senior man present (David Woolley OQ, Winchester Scholar, KC, who read the First Lesson) said afterwards that the day would indeed stay long in the memory.
