'Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium' by Ben T (Year 8)

Ben completed this astonishing mixed-media drawing earlier this year in preparation for his successful application for the Art Scholarship to Sherborne School. In his portfolio, Ben writes:

"I visited this war memorial on a trip to Europe with my family. On this trip, we visited several memorials of the First and Second World Wars. I was inspired by the style of architecture and how important the memorial seemed amongst the local residents of Ypres."

With its dramatic and cinematic chiaroscuro lighting, this drawing is breathtaking. The sheer saturation of detail and intricately finessed surfaces give us more than enough to marvel at. This is a prodigious display of Ben's hard work ethic and his superlative artistic talent.
