Year 6 visit the Treasury, Winchester College
Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to explore some of the items belonging to the collection of the Treasury at Winchester College.
The workshops we have attended support our background topics, one of which is Roman houses and aspects of life in ancient Rome. Under the guidance of Mrs Ceriog-Hughes, our pupils examined and handled a variety of items. Pins, a fishing hook, and bracelets were the most easily recognisable. However, some were rather puzzling and, so far, only guesses can be given at their function, as no further clues can support a definitive answer. Others did show the skilled craft already in use at that time – for example, a beautiful set of keys.
Year 6 impressed us with their solid knowledge of science, as they discussed how they could recognise the material used to create the objects. They had fun connecting certain items to their blossoming knowledge of the Latin language. Their detective skills and enthusiasm were delightful.
At the end of the session, we also had a very entertaining demonstration of the dressing up of a senator.
Hopefully, pupils will be able to connect to the past that we study more effectively, as we continue our exploration of the Roman way of life. The boys are welcome to return to the Treasury, which is open to the public every day between 2pm and 4pm, except 20 December to 2 January inclusive, when the whole College is closed. Entry is free.
Over the coming terms, Years 7 and 8 will also visit the Treasury to discover more about Roman and Greek culture, and we cannot wait to return to this very special place.
