Four books are on offer, one each for Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6 and Years 7 and 8 and an alternative for any pupil in these Year groups. They all have a royal theme, and we hope children will feel inspired to read and to chat about them.

The three Cake Breaks will take place during the week starting Monday 20 June, so we hope that children will have time to explore these beautiful tales.

Years 3 and 4: The Royal Rabbits of London written by Santa Montefiore and Simon Sebag Montefiore and illustrated by Kate Hindley. AR: IL: MY - BL: 5.7

Rats are plotting against the Queen; will timid rabbit Shylo become the hero that comes to the rescue? Delightful and funny; any child falling in love with this lovely character will be glad to know that sequels are available.

Years 5 and 6: The Letter for the King by Tonke Dragt  AR: IL: MY+ - BL: 4.9

In a faraway land, Tiuri is preparing to become a knight when he is asked to complete a secret and important mission for his king that takes him on a perilous journey. Despite the over 400-pages, children will devour this book. The language is rich and the plot has unending twists.

Years 7 and 8: Arthur: the Seeing Stone by Kevin Crossley-Holland AR: IL: MY - BL: 4.3

Where it all began: this is the first volume in the trilogy (followed by At the Crossing Place and King of the Middlemarch). The Arthurian cycle is narrated vividly that a character has even been granted a spin-off by Crossley-Holland (Gatty’s Tale). The sequels gets progressively more complex, and well suited to the older year groups in that respect.
