It is hard to believe that this is the last 'Artwork of the Week for this academic year, but it is fitting that we should end this series of Year 8 profiles with our Art Scholar extraordinaire, Ben T. 

Ben writes about this work as follows:

"This is the Church of Albert, formally known as the 'Basilique Notre-Dame de Brebières'. I visited this church in 2022, when my family and I travelled around the North-Eastern coast of France. I was inspired by the town’s history and the role it played during the Great War (1914-1918). I decided to draw this church as a line drawing, using Albrecht Dürer’s 'Melancolia' (1514) as my main reference."

This is a large-scale (A3) drawing and it is impressive not just because of its size but also due to the sheer quantity and variety of lines that Ben utilises in its execution. The subtle and nuanced tonal gradations he achieves through the slow accumulation of inked lines on lines is quite simply masterful. I would hesitantly predict that he will go on to really enjoy traditional Fine Art printmaking, which the outstanding Art Department at Sherborne School will certainly offer him as their Third Form Art Scholar in the new academic year.
