To reinforce this point, I decided to build a flamethrower from a foot pump and icing sugar as in the photo. 

I was unharmed by the resultant fireball, apart from losing a few hairs off the back of my hand. I have now made some modifications to the flamethrower which should result in a more satisfying explosion and mean that I can stand further from the flame!
