Curriculum

Theology, philosophy, religion

In an atmosphere of honesty and mutual respect, the boys learn to consider controversial issues sensitively and to reflect thoughtfully and tolerantly about theological, philosophical, and religious ideas, past and present.

Theology, philosophy, and religion (TPR), studied for Common Entrance, is structured in a way to encourage an open-minded response to the relevance of religion and all its diversity.

Christianity is singled out for special study throughout the course because of its historical and contemporary influence on British institutions and society. Judaism, because of its importance in understanding Christianity and its historical, geographical, and social relevance also has a central place in the syllabus. Using a thematic approach, pupils also study elements from each world religion.

Philosophy and ethics are an important part of the syllabus. In the Junior years, philosophy emerges organically after reading Bible stories and considering contemporary issues. In the Senior years, the study of the Great Thinkers and their ideas begins formally with Plato.
