Pre-Prep News, Friday 28 January

You may already be aware that the Pre-Prep boys have now joined the Junior and Senior school tradition, by becoming a member of one of the Pilgrims' Sets.  Did you know:

From Mrs Ross

  • Monks and Wrens were established in 1931, when the School opened. They were named respectively after the inhabitants of the Close before the Reformation and the supposed architect of the School buildings
  • The Romans set was founded in 1934, after the early inhabitants of the site (Roman remains were found during excavations on the School site.)
  • The Saxons were established in 1940 and the set was named after the builders of Winchester’s Old Minster.
  • The Normans set was founded in September 1966 and takes its name from a quote of Professor Longuet-Higgins.  (He was an Old Pilgrim and in a speech to the school, reminiscing on the fact that only two sets existed in his time, wondered when "the Norman invasion was going to begin".

The Pre-Prep boys are regularly rewarded for their hard work, awareness of others and their positive learning behaviour at school.  This will of course continue, with the additional bonus of 'Show Ups' after achieving three 'step-ups' on their individual achievement charts or ladders. The 'Show Ups' will contribute to the collective Set Totals for the Pre-Prep as well as being added to the whole school totals. The Pre-Prep boys will be involved in future Set Meetings, Competitions, and rewards.

I hope that the boys will talk to you about their 'Show Ups' as we continue our exciting journey!

Notices

Suitable clothes - Recently the weather has been quite cold during our Forest School sessions, so it is important that the boys are appropriately dressed. Please can the boys always have a warm waterproof coat and waterproof trousers for our Forest School sessions. Layers are very important at this time of year, so the boys can bring in a fleece from home as well as a hat and pair of gloves if they wish.  Thank you.
Mrs Walker

Year 2

A hippopotamus is the most dangerous animal, there are 54 countries and it is the second largest continent on earth.  Yes we have been learning about Africa! We had great fun using our hands to create African wildlife pictures, can you spot our fingers?
Mrs Thorne

Year 1

This week we have been busy learning about The Bayeux Tapestry in topic lessons. We have learnt about what it is, why and how it was made, how long after The Battle of Hastings it was created and even how long it is!  Ask us all about it!  We looked closely at each section and tried to piece it all together adding some very tricky captions to match.

In Maths we have been learning to add two numbers together by 'bridging through 10'. We have used different equipment and methods such as tens frames, number lines and part whole models to help us. We have been using our facts that make 10 to help also and remembering that when adding forwards, we stop at ten and add on the rest.

We have had great fun creating new characters for the story we are going to write linked to the book "The Knight who wouldn't fight".  Some of our characters are lions, dogs and even penguins!  We are looking forward to planning the rest of our stories.

A great week with lots of fantastic learning and fun.  Well done boys.

Magnetic fun: the boys in Reception enjoyed investigating what was made of metal around the classroom and discovered some surprising things.

They have also been building up their fine motor skills using their thumb and index finger to arrange buttons. A great example of a game to play at home is the peg game, race to see who can attach ten clothes-pegs fastest, to themselves/their clothes is the winner! (Pre- writing skills).

Forest School

This week in Forest School the boys had a wonderful time with the ice orbs we created last week. They observed them, tried to spot what was in them, created a game with them, and we even hid the orbs in some magical places for others to find. We also chatted about what will happen to them in the end and why this will happen.

Whilst walking to the arboretum we retold the story of ‘The 3 Little Pigs’ with Year 1. Once at the arboretum I asked the boys to imagine they were the three little pigs and within their group asked them to create a miniature home, made out of straw / grass, sticks and stones. We then had some fun imagining the big bad wolf was going to visit their homes and observed how their homes stood up to the test of being blown down!

The Year 2 boys recalled some of the knots they had previously learned in their Forest School sessions and I gave them the challenge of seeing how far they could make a stick travel using some string and another stick! Of course the boys very quickly realised they had the required skills to make a bow and arrow and rose to the challenge. We then put their designs to the test.
