Flipping Good Fun! Pancake Day races...
What a flipping exciting Shrove Tuesday it was!
The Choristers, dressed in their cassocks and trainers, armed with frying pans, competed against over 30 teams in the Winchester Rotary Pancake Day Race. The relay course involved sprinting 38 metres in front of the cathedral whilst tossing a pancake at several points – easier said than done, especially in the drizzle and wind.
The five super speedy Chorister teams (Y8 ‘Chorister Crêpes’, Y7 ‘Pancake FC’, Y6 ‘Burnt Pancakes’, Y5 ‘Imposter Banana Pancake’ and Probs ‘Red Eggs’) weren’t fazed by running up against fancy-dress clad adult competition from local organisations including Worthy Down Army base, local estate agents and the city mayors. Although they were a little sceptical and embarrassed by the Chorister parents' teams, “Mum’s on the Run” and “Holy Crêpe!”
Against the odds, our Year 6 team made it to a nail-biting final against Millgate builders (who were as big and burly as you might imagine). The tension mounted, the rain poured down, the competitors slipped and slid whilst pancakes tossed and flew like Frisbees. But after much cheering from the crowds, the Choristers WON!
Special mention to Hugo S for his impeccable flipping skills, Otto G who went by in a blur, Henry S for an amazing recovery when he tripped mid-flip, Nathaniel B for running along whilst his pancake was covering his face, Sam O who seemed to fly and to Freddie W and Edward D who ran together and synchronised their pancake flips!
Not forgetting the “Mums on the Run” team who won “Best Fancy Dress.” What? No one mentioned we had to dress up!
