Debating Commoner, report from week 2

Report by Alfie L, Year 8

This week’s motion: ‘This house believes that electric cars should be introduced as fast as possible to help the environment’

Proposition: Zachary S and Nathan C
Opposition: Alvin F and Matthew Z
Judges: Arthur M and Boris H

It is Week 2 of debating, and the first prepared debate is underway. Our first speaker for the Proposition was Zachary S, who gave the audience a clear, helpful explanation of how climate change works, how non-electric cars affect it, and what the consequences are. Then we had Alvin for the Opposition, who gave a good rebuttal to Zachary’s point, saying how the manufacture and disposal of the Lithium batteries used for electric cars is also bad for the environment, impeding the Salt Lake habitat. Next, we had Nathan C, who elaborated upon Zachary’s explanation and the dangers of diesel, hydrogen, and petrol in cars, but once again a good rebuttal was made by the Opposition. Matthew used lots of statistics to back up his point that much of the world’s electricity is non-renewable – around 70%. Both summaries were strong, and all the debaters presented their arguments confidently and persuasively.

Like last week, it was very tight, with only half a point in it, but in the end, it was Proposition that came out on top. The motion was passed that electric cars should be introduced as fast as possible to help the environment.

Next week, the motion will be that the British monarchy should be abolished.
Proposition: Arthur M and Soichiro H
Opposition: Alfie L and Boris H
Judges: Tyler T and Nathan C

I am pleased to announce that the Debating Captains for this year will be Nathan C and Alfie L. The boys were selected by popular vote and will be responsible for ensuring the running of debates, judging and newsletter reports. I have every confidence that both boys will be capable and enthusiastic in their roles and that all boys will have great fun.
