Book Club cake break
Another great Book Club Cake Break week! Pupils from all year groups met over three days to chat about the books chosen for this half term: Ottoline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell; The Glorious Race of Magical Beasts by Alex Bell; Dogs of the Deadland by Anthony McGowan.
Year 3 boys loved Ottoline and had fun imagining ways to capture her antagonist (no spoilers ...) and what adventures they would enjoy to have if they were Ottoline.
Junior boys chatted animatedly about Eli, his friends and the race he must complete which was full of cliffhangers, fantastic creations and moral dilemma: how to decide between staying true to friends and serving a greater cause, if a choice is needed? The boys were full of enthusiasm when talking about the book, loving the setting, the quest and making parallels with the previous Book Club choice, The Lucky Bottle by Chris Wormell.
Dogs of the Deadlands was an entirely different story. One of its readers described it, quite rightly, as having 'the feel of a classic'. Misha's fight for survival in the most difficult circumstances and the cast of characters described so vividly will make of this novel a firm selection in our reading suggestions from now on. We agreed that McGowan was incredibly clever in his storytelling by never giving for granted a positive outcome for Misha or any of the characters whose fate was so often in jeopardy. This allowed the tension to remain until the very last page and made the book truly impossible to put down.
Titles of the next Book Club books will be confirmed during the week before half-term.
