Pastoral care from tutors

Each boy in the school has a tutor who is responsible for his general well-being. Your son and his tutor will touch base each morning before lessons.

We are delighted to be recognised as a school that is 'Great for Pastoral Care' in The Week's Independent Schools Guide. We all care passionately about the wellbeing of every boy at Pilgrims'.

The tutors take great care to see that each of their tutees enjoys a healthy and happy balance of study and additional activities. Your son’s tutor will help to ensure that his academic progress is closely monitored and will communicate that information to you.

Junior tutors

The junior boys’ tutors meet regularly with the Junior pastoral and academic coordinators to share information about the boys. This holistic approach makes sure that the whole picture can be seen, and shared. The junior boys also have time set aside each week for a pastoral focus with their tutor.

Tutor groups

From Year 6, your son will join a tutor group. This will typically consist of ten to twelve boys from Years 6, 7 and 8, under the guidance of a tutor. He will remain in this group, with the same tutor, until it is time to move on to his senior school. Your son and his tutor will establish a strong rapport over the three years, and the tutor will gain a detailed knowledge of his character and abilities. This is augmented by almost daily interaction by the tutor with each of your son’s subject teachers.

From past experience, we have found that the boys really appreciate the continuity of the tutor system and they undoubtedly benefit from the daily interaction with boys from different year groups. As a parent, you will find this insight of your son invaluable when discussing his progress in school and when you are trying to choose his senior school.

TUTOR GROUP FOOTBALL
Boys are very loyal to their tutors and fellow tutees. The tutor group football competition, held in the last week of the academic year, is a great display of mutual friendship, team shirts, and healthy rivalry!

Our Location

We are blessed with a truly idyllic location. Just an hour south of London by direct train, with easy access to all the major travel hubs, and yet we are surrounded by the stunning countryside of the South Downs National Park. The school is tucked away between Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, within the secure and secluded Cathedral Close. Moments from our front door is the heart of the historic city of Winchester, or step through our back gate to find water meadows, countryside, and the South Downs Way.
