On Wednesday evening, the Year 7 and 8 boarders were extremely lucky to be invited to attend a fascinating talk with (former) Formula One supremo, and local resident, Ross Brawn (Wiki link here) at Winchester College.  As one would expect, Ross discussed his route into motorsport, with parental interest and guidance being notably formative. He also touched on a series of aspects which resonated with both me and the boys. Mantras such as: luck is preparation meeting opportunity; and staying calm, as a leader, in the face of adversity, proved the depth of character which gives one the ability to be the best. He also touched on what it meant for a leader to appeal to all their employees, and moreover, show a consistent level of humility – not always easy! This trait, he claimed, galvanised his various teams and had swift and lasting results. The final piece of advice Ross offered was if one puts in the effort, they can be rewarded. On reflection, there are many parallels with how to apply oneself in the workplace, but also that earlier, quite important stage, education.

The evening ended with a series of questions from the audience which ranged from insightful to cheeky!  Who was the best driver?  What are his thoughts on the Monaco circuit?  Who was his least favourite driver?  Why are there an increasing number of races in the Middle East? Answers, I hope, your son can give you should they have been lucky enough to attend.
