U13A v Twyford  Away
25 Over Match
Pilgrims’ lost by 110 runs
Twyford 143-8  W Burnand 2-11, J Kennedy 2-22
Pilgrims’ 33 all out

Having elected to bowl, our boys made an impressive start picking up regular wickets with a period of sustained accurate bowling. Walter Burnand reeled off five overs taking two wickets for only 11 runs. At 61-6 it should have been a matter of mopping up the tail and keeping the Twyford total significantly under 100. However a seventh wicket stand of 42 followed by some aggressive hitting and running by their No.8, who scored 53*, saw Twyford get away to a total of 143-8. In reply we were given a lesson in how to bowl quick, full and straight as our top order were blown away in the space of 6 overs. At 11-5 we were dead and buried, our remaining batsmen valiantly scrambled the score to 33, gaining some valuable time out in the middle. AW

U13B v Twyford  Away
20 Over Match
Pilgrims’ lost by 83 runs
Twyford 149 - 4 (A Singh 2-17)
Pilgrims’ 66 all out

Pilgrims’ made a good account of themselves against a strong Twyford side on Wednesday. The first wicket fell after a sublime catch at backward point by Gregory Kavokin off Arvin Singh, and for a few overs, this really set the tone. The team worked hard in the field, despite this, a number of extras kept topping up the scoreboard for the opposition. Twyford bowled well, giving our batsmen little to work with. David Wang enjoyed his time at the crease, scoring 12. Unfortunately, we came up short today after losing a couple of wickets in quick succession, on to the next! MTG

U12A v Twyford Home
25 Over Match
Pilgrims’ won by 17 runs
U12A 111-7 (O Maclay 50 ret, T McSheehy 17no)
Twyford 94-8 (A Currie 16-3, O Maclay 7-2)

On an overcast day, Pilgrims lost the toss and were put in to bat.  A superb opening partnership of 41 between Ollie Maclay and Henry Steen (13), at a run a ball, set the innings up nicely.  Silas Kendall (10) helped the scoreboard along and at 50-1 after only 9 overs, things looked very rosy.  However, scoring was never easy on a slow outfield, and when Kendall went, followed by three quick wickets in the middle order, 50-1 quickly turned into 63-5.  When Ollie retired at 50, it looked like we might struggle to post a competitive score.  However, excellent batting from our no. 7 and 8 (Teddy McSheehy – 17*, and Laurie Sawbridge – 13) saw us to a very competitive total of 111.  Twyford’s chase never really got going.  Tight bowling (led by Captain Archie Currie’s 16-3) restricted them and at 56-2 from 18 overs, it looked that they had left themselves too much to do.  Indeed, despite a late flurry at the end of their innings, that’s how it turned out, with Twyford left 17 runs short.  A superb performance from the boys.  AD

U12B v Twyford Home
20 Over Match
Pilgrims’ lost by 3 wickets
Pilgrims’ 81-9 (J Koo 16)
Twyford 84-6

It was fantastic to be out playing competitive cricket again after such a long time and there was a palpable sense of excitement amongst the boys! Deciding to bat first, we made a slow yet steady start. Alex Bain was unlucky to get one that kept low, but otherwise we were kept in check by some very handy glovework behind the stumps, their wicketkeeper keeping extras to a minimum and adding 3 decent stumpings to boot. Jinmo Koo came in at 6 and hit a brisk 16 and Felix Mason added an important 14 at the end, but it looked like a few runs too short. And so it proved; Qiang struck in the second over, but Twyford's top order looked relatively comfortable and ran well, allowing them to chase down our total with 4 overs to go. Promising signs for sure, but equally, plenty of things to tighten up on! Well done to all. WD

Colts A v Twyford @St Cross
20 Over Match
Pilgrims’ lost by 87 runs
Twyford 148/2 from 20 overs
Colts A 61 all out from 19.5 overs

Twyford batted well from the first over, taking quick singles and timing the ball with accuracy.  The Pilgrims’ bowling attack showed some good defence, but they were unable to thwart the high scoring Twyford sustained throughout their innings.  The Pilgrims’ reply started poorly with 3 wickets falling in the first over.  Pilgrims’ really lacked the power and fluidity that Twyford played with, and the result was a very fair reflection of the ability of the two teams.  The return fixture, next Saturday, is a good chance to show some signs of improvement. AA

Colts B v Twyford Home
Pairs Match
Pilgrims’ lost by 175 runs
Pilgrims’ 168
Twyford 343

The Colts B team played their first fixture of the season on Wednesday, 12 May. There was a lot of nervous tension in the air before play began, but the boys were up to the challenge. The game was played using the Pairs Format and each team started with 200 runs. Twyford went into bat first and managed to keep the runs coming at a steady rate. The Pilgrims' boys struggled to hold onto catches and very few wickets were taken during the innings, resulting in Twyford amassing 343 runs. The Colts went into bat and a steady stream of wickets led to far too many multiples of 5 runs being deducted, resulting in the boys only being able to score a total of 168 runs. Conrad Bowyer displayed some potential with the bat, as did Alex Allen. William Croft performed well as wicket-keeper on the day. A tough first fixture for our boys, but they enjoyed the opportunity to be out on the pitch and to compete. CC

Foals Lords vs Twyford Away
20 Over Match
Twyford won by 9 wickets
Pilgrims' 56 all out
Twyford 60-1

What a difference a few days and different opposition make!  Against strong opposition we struggled in all facets of the game to get into the match, and were soundly beaten.  But, there are always positives.  Michael batted for many overs, seeing the team through to at least some kind of total.  George Steen kept well, Aditya bowled very well and James Pett remained positive, chatty and supportive all through the game. We do need to improve our running between the wickets and our awareness of field placements, but there are always things to work on.  The boys are always positive and ready to learn from their mistakes.  Keep it up. MS

Foals Oval v Twyford Away
Hard Ball Pairs
Pilgrims' 212
Twyford 302

Although Pilgrims' were soundly beaten, it did not take the shine off a magnificent effort and performance for the boys first ever hard ball cricket match! Pilgrims were excited to get going and batted first. With a lack of experience, we struggled to score heavily and relied mainly on wides and no balls from Twyford to notch any runs. Harry King and John Garret chipped in with a few nicely placed shots, but the scored runs were quickly reversed by some good wickets from Twyford (5 runs deducted for each wicket lost). After tea Pilgrims’ took to the field and did themselves proud. Our bowling was far more accurate than Twyford’s, only bowling 3 wides and 3 no balls in the whole innings! However the ability of a few of the opposing batsmen was very impressive and they started to play some lovely strokes to the boundary to run away with the win. A fantastic afternoon had by all and one to remember for our boys!

Great to be back! JB

Our year 8 cricket group recently took part in an internal 6 a-side cricket tournament. Four teams competed against each other in a 10 over format where all players, apart from the wicket keeper, had to bowl two overs. As well as points for winning there were bonus points available for batting, 1 point for every 25 runs scored, and for bowling, 1 point for every two wickets taken. A close finish point was also available.
