Advent Service at Winchester College – 1st December
On 1st December, Winchester College Chapel hosted its annual Advent Service, marking the beginning of the Advent season. Advent is a time of spiritual preparation leading up to the celebration of Christ’s coming (adventus).
The Advent Service is always one of the musical highlights of the year at Winchester College, and this year was no exception. The evening began with a festive reception, setting a joyful tone for the service that followed. The lights dimmed as the service commenced with the Bidding, followed by the processional hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel, sung by the Chapel Choir with the Quiristers as they entered the Chapel.
The service featured a beautiful selection of hymns, including Hark the Glad Sound, and concluded with Lo! He Comes, all maintaining the theme of Advent. Traditional Advent lessons and responsories were interwoven throughout the service.
As always, the Chapel Choir performed to their usual high standards. Two pieces, in particular, stood out. A Spotless Rose by Herbert Howells and Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day were highlights of the evening’s repertoire. Alex, from the back row, delivered a stunning bass solo in A Spotless Rose, while tambourine and percussion added a lively rhythm to Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, enhancing the choir’s performance beautifully.
After the service, Ben C provided a memorable conclusion, playing Bach’s Prelude in B Minor as the congregation exited. Overall, the Advent Service at Winchester College was a deeply moving and musical celebration of the season, filled with hope and joy.
