This week's motion was: Should the British monarchy be abolished? The report this week is written by Zachary in 8S.

Our Motion Today: This house believes that the British Monarchy should be abolished.

Proposition: Arthur M, Soichiro
Opposition: Alfie L, Boris
Judges: Tyler, Nathan C

It is week three of debating commoner! To start this debate, we had Soichiro for Proposition 1. Soichiro started strongly and confidently with the point that the monarchy is useless. Then he brought about the point that the royal family expenses are a lot. He expressed this point well by using repetition and statistics. Next, Alfie rebutted Soichiro’s point well by stating that the royal family also earns money by doing tours and gaining support from the Commonwealth. He then brought the point confidently that the royal family is a role model for the people and that 62% of the people support the royal family. Alfie spoke with a sense of authority and knowledge.

Matters were getting more complex when Proposition 2, Arthur M rebutted Alfie's point, then introduced his own point that abolishing the royal family may be for the royal family’s own good because of the mass amounts of publicity and lack of privacy. Arthur also provided an example and spoke clearly and slowly. Lastly, Opposition 2 started by explaining the point that the royal family holds the commonwealth together and repeated Alfie’s point on the earnings of the royal family are more than what they expend, speaking clearly and concisely.

Questions then followed from the audience. Alvin F asked first about the data around popular support for the monarchy. Alfie explained in clear data what this currently stood at. Javier R then asked Soichiro to elaborate on the idea of who needs the monarchy in the first place, which was answered well with some help from Arthur M with good teamwork.

For the summary, Proposition Arthur M summarised Proposition’s points well and powerfully. Opposition Alfie L summarised all opposition points and elaborated well.

The judges then prepared to speak and announce the winners:

Tyler started by stating that Soichiro and Arthur’s points were good, and he liked the point on why the royal family did not like the publicity. Nathan then continued for the Opposition who he said spoke clearly and had a good presentation.

In conclusion, Nathan announced that the motion would not carry, and the British Monarchy should not be abolished.

Next week’s motion is that social media is harmful for children.
Proposition: Connor W and Javier R
Opposition: Zubin D and Nathan C
Judges: Zachary S and Matthew Z

Next week’s reporter will be Arthur M
