Pre-Prep News, Friday 17 May
What a pleasure it was to welcome so many Pre-School visitors to our 'Pilgrims' Play' session this morning! We had lots of fun outside with water, and it was wonderful to see the boys enjoying themselves and making new friends. Next session is Friday 7 June; please do join us.
From Mrs Hall
We began the week with a visit from the RNLI. Brian shared valuable information on how to stay safe while on the beach and explained the importance of lifeboats. The boys were very engaged and learned a lot about beach safety. On Tuesday, Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Chichester Harbour. The boys behaved impeccably, even managing the mile walk to Dell Quay with enthusiasm and curiosity! It was a great day of exploration and learning about a coastal environment. Reception and Year 1 are eagerly anticipating their own adventures next week. We are sure they will have equally exciting and educational experiences.
We are excited to invite you to our Celebration Assembly on Friday 24 May at 1115. Each class will be keen to share their recent experiences from their exciting school excursions. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the boys to showcase what they’ve learned and for parents to see the highlights of our educational activities. We look forward to seeing many of you there and sharing these special moments together.

Year 2 trip to Dell Quay, Chichester Harbour
On Tuesday, the Year 2s had an amazing day down at Chichester harbour. The weather forecast was not looking promising. The boys dressed in tracksuits, wellies and waterproof coats with waterproof trousers packed in our backpacks, and travelled by minibus. THANK YOU, Mr (Chris) Bell, for taking us down to Fishbourne, where we met Jane and Nick from Chichester Harbour Education Service.
Our trip began beside Fishbourne Pond and the reed beds. From there, we walked to a stream where the boys were treated to a dipping session. With Mrs Pleming and Mrs Kent wearing the tallest wellies, they tentatively entered the stream, along with half of the class, while others waited on the bank clutching identifying sheets and magnifying glasses. After a few bottom shuffles and some dips of their nets, the boys brought their catches to the bank to be studied. Their prize catches were a baby eel, a minnow and some water-beetles.
We continued our morning with a mile-long walk in squelching wellies along the mud flats, past a boatyard, before we reached Dell Quay. After lunch and leaving our coats behind, we stepped down onto the beach where we set off on a hunt for plants and creatures hiding in their natural habitats. It was not long before we heard squeals of delight as many crabs were found. We later released our catches into newly made crab hotels. The last activity was to make a mini collage from pieces found on the shoreline.
Thank you to our Gap, Mr Zieler, who accompanied us and brought a lot of calm to our day. We had a wonderful time!

Boats
This week has focused heavily on boats.
- We heard from Brian Masters, our visitor from the RNLI, that the Shannon Class lifeboat, moored at Portsmouth Lifeboat Station can rescue up to 100 people at one time.
- He also helped us to understand that inflatable boats are not sturdy enough to withstand wind and waves at the beach. These should only be played with if an adult is on dry land, holding on to the other end of the rope.
- We had a go at making two different types of boats.
- One had a hull made from corks, and the other used a plastic water bottle to stay afloat. The boys investigated both materials and realised they floated and would therefore make good materials for boats. We really enjoyed playing with our cork boats in our tuff tray full of water. The boys found various ways of making the boats move across the water.
- We created a motor for our plastic bottle boat out of medicine spoons and an elastic band. Can you believe they really travelled through water? We had huge amounts of fun around the school pond. Thankfully, the fish were not bothered in the slightest. Bath time will be extra fun this week!
The boys continue to be motivated for their Mayday Mile Challenge. Keep looking at Tapestry for photo updates. Any donations are greatly received. The link to our fundraising page is RNLI - Year 1 - The Pilgrims' School

Reception
We have had a busy week in Reception Class this week. The boys have been very motivated towards learning more about Australian and Asian animals. They have really developed their understanding of the Seven Continents of the World and which animals are key, from each one. Do ask your son if he can name one animal from each continent. They may also be able to talk about this animal's habitat.
Mrs Thorne very kindly shared some photos and slides with the boys from her recent trip to Africa. She chatted to them about the amazing animals she saw. The boys were able to see these animals in their habitats and had some interesting questions to ask Mrs Thorne. Thank you, Mrs Thorne, for sharing this with us!
During our Art session this week, the boys were able to continue with their watercolour painting. We watched a short video of how to create animal patterns onto a coloured base layer using the tip of a brush. The boys then learnt how to mix and apply different shades to their work. I was very impressed with how well the boys managed to do this for themselves. Super effort and excellent results! Well done!
Lastly, we are very much looking forward to our class trip to The Blue Reef Aquarium on Monday 20 May. I hope that you have seen the SchoolPost that was sent on 14 May at 16:30. Please ensure that your son has had suncream applied before school, and also that he brings a coat. The weather is looking quite mixed for Monday!
Have a lovely weekend.
