Tomorrow we have our return block fixture with Farleigh, near Andover. The 1sts and 2nds play in the Rory McDonagh tournament there, with an earlier start of 1330. The pitch for the 5ths / 6ths is currently scheduled to be Meads, accessed via the Porters’ Lodge on College Street and on the other side of the College Chapel.
On Friday, Years 3 and 4 both have fixtures with Elstree, and on Saturday we look forward to playing Papplewick.
We have started rugby on Tuesdays, so just a reminder for mouthguards. For contact, these are compulsory and for touch, they are recommended.
Next Tuesday, however, we have our football team photos.

Match Reports
Wednesday 1 November
1st XI vs Winchester College
Lost 2-0
What a fun afternoon. Winchester organised a scratch team made up of their U14 As and Bs (and including some old friends!) to give us a ‘friendly’ game on the hallowed Winchester pitches. First things first, the boys loved the experience of playing on their pitches (though I’m not sure George S enjoyed the size of the goal!). Secondly, this was a really good game. The greater size, speed and power of the Winchester players was obvious, but we stuck to our task well. Halfway through the first half, we conceded two goals; frustratingly, it was a tale told before – chances to get the ball away weren’t taken, and individual mistakes cost us. However, it remained a close game and in the second half we somewhat dominated the play; again, another one of our weaknesses resurfaced – not taking enough shots and not taking our chances. All in all, a most impressive performance from the boys in a fun game that would have done them the world of good. ASD
2nd XI vs Winchester College
Lost 3-1 (Olly P)
On the nicest (and probably biggest) pitch many of the boys will have played on, there was a touch of ‘men against boys’ as the two sides lined up, if only from a size point of view! However, as is this team’s customary approach, they didn’t take a backwards step all game. With our ranks swelled with the silky skills of Ike C, we looked cohesive and slick when attacking – particularly on the right wing.
We found ourselves a goal down early on though - dawdling in defence allowed their striker to lash home convincingly, but heads stayed up, and we worked our way into the game. For the majority of the first half, we probably had the upper hand in terms of both possession and territory, but not – crucially, the goal to show for it. Boys normally love to ‘have a go’, but here they seemed more reluctant to pull the trigger, which meant the WC goalkeeper remained relatively untroubled.
Winchester doubled their lead at the start of the second half, but again, it felt like we were well in the game and just needed a break. It finally came with about 10 mins to go, Olly P riffling home from the edge of the box to make it very much game on. However, as legs began to tire, we got hit on the break, and it ended up 3-1 at the final whistle.
Special mention must go to Chenhan Z in goal who, not for the first time this season, was excellent and made a number of outstanding saves at crucial points in the match, and also to Gleb H, who was tenacious, classy and tireless in his running. An excellent match, and in truth, one we could have won had we remembered our shooting boots(!), but a great performance and great team effort. Well done to all. WD
Colts United VII vs Sherborne House
Lost 5-0
It was a fine afternoon for football. We were under the cosh a little bit from the start but some stout defending from the Pilgrims’ boys made things tricky for the visitors. Nevertheless, Sherborne House did manage to show some flair and chalked a few goals up by half-time. With the score as it was, we decided to concede the match and played the second half with mixed teams, producing a much more even encounter. It was a great occasion of conviviality and endeavour followed by copious amounts of match tea. AJS
Colts City VII vs Sherborne House
Lost 8-0
A welcomed break in the weather allowed for a fun afternoon of football. The game really was a tale of two halves. The first half was an even affair. Sherborne House retained more possession, but Pilgrims’ defensive efforts put up a good fight! Poor James Y took two body blows in a row, stopping a goal but ultimately and sadly taking him out of the fixture. It was 2-0 to Sherborne House at half-time. Goalkeeper, Alfie H had a fantastic game. His efforts did not go unnoticed by both sides. The visitors really hit a rhythm in the second half. They pulled way, leaving us slightly deflated. We were beaten by the better side on the day, but did show glimpses, and were unlucky not to have featured on the scoresheet. MT
Monday 6 November
Year 5 & 6 swimmers travelled to Twyford yesterday evening for a gala. The races were very competitive, and it was a great experience. All the boys swam really well and particular congratulations go to Daniel M, of Year 5, who won the individual medley, breaststroke and butterfly, Sasha G who won the Year 6 backstroke and freestyle, and Lucas J who won the breaststroke in Year 6.
Well done to Lucas L of Year 5 who entered a U11 Gold Badminton tournament in Kent last Saturday. He achieved 5th place in Boys’ Singles and 3rd place in Boys’ Doubles with a bronze medal.
