We have just had an afternoon of all Year 3 and 4 in matches with Salisbury Cathedral School, reports to follow next week.
Tomorrow, we play Farleigh, with Colts A at the ISFA tournament held at Bedales (please note the earlier start time). Also, our 6th IX will be playing at Winchester College’s Palmer Field and I expect all Year 7 & 8 pupils to be involved across our eldest teams. Palmer Field is where Kingsgate Tennis Club is.
On Saturday, we have round one of our highly anticipated Inter-Set football. This is for all of Year 4 and up. As shown below, Year 4 and 5 start first with the seniors arriving later. Spectators welcome.
On Sunday, good luck to Foals A as they take part in a tournament at Winchester College.

U9 A & B VII v Stroud
Won 2-1 (Patrick B, Bertie L) and drew 1-1 (Rufus W)
This was a fun occasion. We split into two triangulars, our four teams versus Stroud’s two. When we weren’t playing Stroud, we were able to have a mixed Pilgrims’ game going on at the same time. The matches with Stroud were pretty even. In the B games, Stroud went ahead in the first half, with Rufus smashing in a cracking shot to save the draw.
In the A game, Patrick got Pilgrims’ off to a good start with a great goal from the edge of the box. Stroud equalised in the second period which lead to a rocky finish. It was Bertie who got the winner with another super shot! AJS
U9 C & D VII v Stroud
Drew 1-1 (Thomas H-P) and Lost 3-0
Stroud hosted the U9’s for a wonderful afternoon of football. It was brilliant to have the whole year group out on adjacent pitches. The afternoon had it all, the good, the bad and the ugly – but definitely more good! Both matches were played with a fantastic spirit and were close affairs. Our C team were in a nail-biting game. Stroud went ahead in the game, but Pilgrims’ rallied tremendously. The equaliser was grabbed by Thomas H-P as he cooly slotted it home. Scipio S and Teddy C-H combined to make a solid midfield, creating an attacking platform for the rest of the team. We were unlucky not to find a winning goal.
The second fixture was tough, Stroud played some good football in order to breakdown our defence, led by Angelos T. Stroud scored two goals in quick succession, but this was not mission impossible for Pilgrims’. The boys dug in and came close themselves. Artem T displayed great ball control, turning the opposition defenders inside out. A great effort, very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Well done all. MTG
U8 A VII v Stroud
Lost 4-2
A superb match with some excellent football from both teams. Pilgrims’ started slowly and fell 2 goals behind, but gradually grew into the match. Dev was strong in midfield and Tristan managed 2 wonderful goals to bring the score level at half time. As time ticked on in the second period, The mammoth effort from all the Pilgrims’ players started to take its toll and they began to show fatigue. Stroud took advantage and scored 2 more goals meaning the game ran away from us. But what a fantastic afternoon of football fun! Well done to all.
U8 B VII v Stroud
Lost 4-0
A tough day for the under 8 B team today who were matched up against a particularly strong Stroud opposition. Some impressive keeping from both Teddy W in the first half and Teddy J in the second helped keep the scoreline down to only 4 goals. However, Pilgrims' were unable to convert on opportunities they had in their opposition’s half.
I encouraged the boys to take a little more time in offence and to keep their heads up in order to make short and sharp passes into space. Shoutout to Alexander L who really took on this advice, running around like Forrest Gump in order to escape his opposition and receive the ball unmarked.
Overall I was impressed with the skill of individuals, and look forward to seeing them improve their teamwork over the season. MMG
U8 C VII v Stroud
Lost 4-0
Tuesday afternoon's match was a tight game for the first half with no goals being scored by either side. Players such as Samuel and Charlie supported the brilliant work of Finn in goal and were a trio of little giants showing great defensive skills. After the half time break Stroud came out firing and scored 2 goals in rapid speed. We worked hard to create some scoring opportunities of our own with some great drilling from Kabir and attempts at goal from both Darcy and Xavier. Stroud continued their attacking and scored 2 more goals just before the end of the game. It was a very fair game despite the score line and gave our team a great opportunity to improve their skills. 1st XI vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 5-2 (Tobi O 3, Neil C, Ike C)
In lovely surroundings the boys had to adjust to the surprise decision that this would be an 8-a-side game. With 5 subs on and off regularly, and a new formation, one could have forgiven the boys for not clicking; not a bit of it, this was by far our best performance of the season so far, with some lovely football played. Tobi O was a handful all afternoon, a real predator, and more than deserved his hat-trick (he could have had more, were he not rested for parts of the game). Ike C had his best game of the season and was rewarded with a goal, and similarly with Fraser N, who has now secured his place in the 1st XI having come up from the 2nds. To be fair to Salisbury, they never laid down, and some lovely football led to a deserved couple of goals. All in all a lovely afternoon, with a great bit of football too. ASD
2nd XI vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 6-0
This was our first match against Salisbury and it became quite quickly apparent that there was a bit of a gap between the two teams. Salisbury only turned up with 8 boys, so Bertie W, Edward B and Seb B kindly agreed to join their ranks to make it 11 v 11. However, whilst this made the game a little more manageable, we still found ourselves 3 goals up after about 5 or 6 minutes. The game became more even when we gave then an additional player, but the goals kept coming. Chenhan Z made one great save and his distribution was excellent, but it was only towards the end that the Year 7 triumvir of Will S, Gleb H and Thomas K started to play some genuinely impressive, free flowing football, which makes next year a very exciting prospect. Gleb’s tireless running, Will’s basic instinct in front of goal, and man of the match Thomas who showed all the craft of a seasoned, ball playing defender were the highlights. 6-0 was probably about right; a comfortable day at the office, but good to get another win under our belts nonetheless. Well done to all. WD
3rd XI vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 9-2 (James P, Louis M, Orlando S, Jayden L, Ennis Z, James H)
Salisbury were a good natured and friendly side. They had only seven players and so three Pilgrims’ boys took it in turns each half to play for Salisbury. The game was really all one way. Salisbury were rather disorganised, and the 3rd IX pulled together to exploit the weakness. There was plenty of passing and running into space. And some cool heads in front of goal. Salisbury’s keeper was, in fact, one of their best players. He made several good saves. Nevertheless, Pilgrims’ could not resist the temptation of rushing Salisbury’s goal, and in doing so, lost all their shape and stopped scoring goals. Reflecting this, the score in the second half was 3-2. PB
4th XI vs Bryanston and Salisbury Cathedral School
Lost 3-1 against Bryanston (William I)
Won 4-0 against Salisbury Cathedral School (Hamish W, George S, Teddy E, William I)
A very positive day for the 4ths who played in a triangular against both Bryanston and Salisbury Cathedral schools. Bryanston proved to be a particularly strong opposition, however Pilgrims didn’t let them get away with an easy win, with William I scoring a great goal to keep the opposition on their toes.
After a short break, the boys were back on for a second game, in which they were able to step up their game significantly by getting on the front foot early on and scoring 3 goals within the first 10 minutes! These were enabled by some great defensive and midfield playmakers who were able to transfer the ball quickly up the field to our strikers. Special mention to Jerri D for numerous assists from the left wing and also to our gladiator goalie Leo L who, on top off some very impressive keeping, nearly managed to score a goal of his own with a huge boot from his own goalie box! MMG
5th XI vs Yateley Manor
It was fun to visit an unfamiliar school. We split into two seven a side matches. One pitch was fairly even with close games. The other pitch was weighted more to Yateley’s stronger players, so that was more of a challenge with plenty of contact over the ball. Nevertheless, the teams acquitted themselves with courage and I thought some good passing play was in evidence. We need some stronger shots on goal and a bit more communication in defence. AJS
Colts A VII vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 7-2 (Elliot N 2, Patrick B, Boris H, Christian B, Archie W, Theo M)
This was a tale of two cities, with Winchester and Pilgrims’ Colts A coming getting the upper hand. Pilgrims’ looked confident throughout this fixture, making effective use of the slightly bigger pitch. The team managed to secure the lion-share of possession, utilising the space and time available to them. Patrick B opened up the scoring as momentum grew in our favour. The usual suspects found themselves on the scoresheet as Pilgrims’ pulled away from the opposition. Boris H enjoyed a more attacking role, securing a goal for himself in the process. The second half followed suit. Elliot N notched a second goal as we moved further in control of the game. Salisbury showed glimpses and it needed the cool heads of Austin S and Theo W at the back to keep them at bay. Despite Salisbury’s attempts, there was no revenge of our sith goal, as Theo M put the game to bed, scoring the seventh and final. An excellent performance and a well deserved win! MTG
Colts B VII vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Lost 1-0
Pilgrims’ faced Sailsbury’s A side and played with true grit throughout, we were unlucky to not come away with the win having a shots on goal ratio of 3:10 in favour of Pilgrims. “Cool Hands” Lucas J. even saved a pair of penalties. Sailsbury were more technically gifted but the Pilgrims magnificent 7 played with high energy and determination. That stifled the Sailsbury attack. With the very last touch of the game Sailsbury scored the go-ahead goal from a counter attacking opportunity. If we could be more ruthless in front of goal and have a crisper final pass in the attacking third, we would better convert our chances.
Colts C VII vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 1-0 (Edward D)
The Colts C team stepped onto the ‘Field of Dreams’, and gave an excellent account of themselves this week. In our first ‘Encounter’ against Salisbury Cathedral School in as long as anyone here can remember, the boys did not quite know what to expect. Salisbury were solid on attack and were able to create options with relative ease to start with. They looked quite dangerous at times, but the Pilgrims’ defence held firm, and credit must be given to Freddie W for his marked improvement as goal-keeper.
The breakthrough came about 2 minutes before the end of the match, when Edward D booted one straight into the mouth of the goal from just outside the D. The boys were very pleased to have pulled off their first win of the season, and hopefully this will set the scene for future matches.
Foals A VII vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Won 7-2
A tough physical battle that Pilgrims’ managed well! Nicolas was strong in midfield and the centre back pairing of Lucas and Daniel was solid! Rio got the ball rolling with a well-placed free kick into the top corner and the goals continued to flow. Finlay showed excellent offensive play and Connor notched 2 goals himself! Alex even had a run out in midfield after showing his usual excellence in goal! A great afternoon of football! Well done
Foals B & C vs Salisbury Cathedral School
Both teams drew 0-0
With Salisbury fielding just one team, and the Choristers requiring an early finish, the boys played two shortened matches split across the B & C teams. The boys were exemplary as they waited patiently on the touchline, and it was great to see so many individuals get stuck in with 100% effort for the fixture. Playing on astro required a different sort of technique, with the extra bounce being hard to predict, and both teams often struggling to keep the ball on the floor. It was great to see the boys using the space well on the pitch, and the number of passes increase from last week. Targets going forwards are to keep the communication up between teammates, and for us not to be afraid of the back-pass as an option to retain the ball. CAL.

1st XI vs Cothill
Won 4-3 (Neil C, Barnaby D, Finn R, Charles N)
WHAT. A. GAME. The anticipation ahead of what was an important game, at home, and with a big (and vociferous) crowd, was huge. The traditional Cothill fixture (always hard fought) was doubling up as an ISFA cup match too, and so the pressure was strong. We started well, and really had Cothill on the back foot. However, when after five minutes Cothill scored a slightly fortunate goal after a deflection, they suddenly came alive. With two quick and powerful players up front, we struggled to contain them, and despite largely having the better of the possession, they always looked threatening. Two quick goals on around 20 minutes found us really up against it at 3-0. However, credit to the boys they didn’t give up, and with five minutes to half-time, Neil C went on one of his lung-busting runs, starting in his own half, and ending with the ball thrashed into the top of the net! 3-1 down at half-time felt a little tough on the balance of play, but at least now we had belief. A headed goal from a corner by Captain Barnaby D (so often the soul of the team) ten minutes into the second half made the confidence grow, and now Cothill were rocking. However, despite our dominance, the equaliser stubbornly wouldn’t come. Indeed, as we tired a little later in the half, Cothill came back into the match and had two gilt edge chances to wrap up the tie: one saved bravely by George S, and one an inexplicable miss with the goal gaping after the ball had hit the post; it looked like the game might have gone. With five minutes to go, a piece of real quality drew the game level. After some nice work in midfield, the ball went up to striker Fraser N, who laid it back to Finn R at the top of the D, who struck a firm shot into the roof of the net. Beautiful. It was now all Pilgrims’, and with only a couple of minutes to play, we won yet another corner; Finn R made the decision to pull the ball back to the edge of the box, where Charles N was waiting to loft the ball over the keeper and into the roof of the net. Cue pandemonium, and two minutes of staunch defending. The boys saw the game out comfortably, for a memorable and exhilarating win! This writer had to go off at the end of the afternoon and have a lie down in a dark room! ASD
2nd XI vs Cothill
Won 2-0 (Will S, Dami O)
This was a game I had highlighted to the boys earlier in the week as being a good benchmark for us as a team. Games against Cothill have often been quite close, but we took a hefty beating from them last season, and we always come away from it knowing we’ve been in a game.
This time was no exception. The first five minutes of the match showed that the two teams were evenly matched and that we might be in for a tense afternoon. We looked comfortable with the ball but were not afforded much time as Cothill pressed and harried with good effect. Bryan S was nice and physical in his role shielding the back four, but we looked both dangerous and vulnerable on the break. Fortunately, the first goal went our way, with William S, who caused lots of problems all afternoon, cool-ly slotting past the advancing keeper.
However, Cothill upped their physicality and, driven by a strong desire to get back in the game, attacked with more fluency. It was turning into a bit of a battle, with some sharp elbows and florid shirt pulling being used to unsettle, but we were not to be cowed, and the boys stuck at it admirably and kept calm heads. Chenhan Z also made a crucial and brilliant one-handed save just before half-time.
The second half really belonged to Cothill in terms of possession and territory, but to us in terms of spirit and a sheer will to win. Cothill’s desperation grew as the half wore on and this was only compounded after a goalkeeping error saw Dami O take advantage of the situation to make it 2-0. In truth, it still didn’t feel like we were out of the woods, but thanks to man of the match Chenhan in goal, who made a succession of frankly astonishing, unusual and crucial saves over the whole match, we saw it out and were delighted to get a hard-fought victory. Looking at the boys take stock, home and dry, victorious, wide-eyed, and relieved was very rewarding.
Taking part in competitive sport is important, but sometimes, so is winning. There was a Cothill boy in tears of frustration which showed how much that game had meant to both teams. Win, lose or draw, you can always take something from each experience – it's how we learn, and I hope the boys learnt a lot about themselves here; that they are committed, supportive, hardworking boys, who refuse to give up. A proud day and a proper game of football! Well done to all. WD
3rd XI vs Cothill
Drew 0-0
A nail-biting game against Cothill for our 3rds this afternoon, with momentum see-sawing throughout the match. Despite Cothill having the majority of the possession, our defenders fought very well to prevent scoring opportunities. Leo L earned himself man of the match with his consistently impressive keeping, especially through his clever decision-making in boldly advancing up the box to meet the opposition strikers. Jerry D was particularly versatile and made a huge goal-saving tackle. Our midfielders were a constant threat, Tokyo drifting up and down the pitch to support in defence and create opportunities in offence. All ten Pilgrims' players should be very proud of their high-class performance today! MMG

6th VII vs Cothill
Lost 8-0
The 6th team had a novel experience of playing their match on Meads at Winchester College on Saturday. The surroundings are unique and full of historical interest and, given the score line, you might be forgiven for imagining the boys were perhaps distracted by the prestigious backdrop. Nothing could be further from the truth with the boys putting their heart and soul into facing a fast and physical Cothill side.
From the first open exchanges it was clear they were playing a side that had speed and a deft touch in tight play. Not adapting to this quickly was ultimately their undoing; going into challenges dynamically rather than standing off and shepherding the player away from goal. The goals themselves were indeed suited to players of the College boys' size and so it was a tough afternoon for any keeper! Ignoring the scoreline, the Cothill keeper did have plenty to do, but was not regularly troubled by shots on goal. And therein lies the target for the next game; shoot! Pilgrims’ boys are known for their politeness and generosity and on Saturday there appeared a sense that if you passed to someone else in the ‘red zone’ you were thinking of the team (true), but really it just needed someone to put a foot through the ball near the enormous goals!
The scoreline and decision-making aside, it was an entertaining match which was end to end excitement and truly thrilling at times. All the boys really put a shift in for the team, their heads never went down, and a huge effort went in right up to the final whilst. A couple of honourable mentions for Nathan Z and Patrick H in defence, who chased and chased and harried Cothill players relentlessly. SL
8th VII vs Cothill
Lost 3-0
Where to be on L.A.-zy Saturday afternoon? Cheering on the mighty 8th VII is where I found myself, and it was far from a lazy time. It Tokyo, as a spectator, on a thrill ride. The boys showed determination, Seoul and grit throughout the match, with Antoine Rome-ing all over the pitch with decisive tackles and crucial clearances. Max B played an equally integral role and nearly scored in the first half with his powerful Lillehammer shot. During the second half, the boys worked tirelessly in defence and attack, Harry K finding Oliviero a few times with good opportunities. The Cothill attack proved relentless and Donghan was unlucky on one occasion when a shot went Oslo as it did. I thought I had seen it all, until our sturdy keeper decided to take on the hosts with a dazzling run into their half, both scaring and entertaining his team-mates. Despite the scoreline, the team rose optimistically and congratulated each other warmly, before München on a delectable match tea. A great afternoon had by all. Well done, boys. DP
Colts A VII vs Cothill
Won 3-1 (Elliot N 3)
Another impressive outing from the Colts A, as they took on a competitive and smart outfit in Cothill. Pilgrims’ started with intent, imposing themselves on the fixture from the first whistle. Once again, Pilgrims’ were able to string the passes together, building possession. Patrick B offered width and a strong attacking outlet on the left. Elliot N’s first goal was a well taken team goal. Cothill edged into the game, creating a number of chances themselves. Farid A looked secure in goal, saving two dangerous attempts during the first half. We went into halftime 2-0 up after a sweet strike from Elliot.
The second half was a similar affair. Cothill grew further into the game but could not get past our defence or Farid. Theo W had a blinding game. Right place, right time. There was true Seoul and character displayed by the team. They were not allowing Cothill to take a hold in the fixture, fighting and winning all the 50:50s. Elliot wrapped up a fantastic hattrick after Patrick had weaved his way through the tiring opposition. Another goal to bury the game was not a million miles away, but it was Cothill who struck late to get one back. They scored with just 9 seconds left on the clock! Another strong display. A tough game, but nice to take stock at holm before the tournament next week. Well done all. MTG

Colts C VII vs Cothill
Lost 3-0
The Colts Cs fought bravely against the Cothill Bs, and were in no way outclassed. They managed to keep Cothill at bay for most of the first half, and even looked quite dangerous at times. Unfortunately, they conceded a goal just before half-time, which left them 1-0 down at the break.
The second half was a hotly contested affair, and the Pilgrims’ defence was solid. The boys were beginning to find a bit more space, and some of their politeness was beginning to wear off somewhat in the way in which they contested the ball. Sadly, Cothill managed to score two quick goals near the end of the game, and the Pilgrims’ boys were left to mull their strategy for next week’s fixture… CXC
Colts United & City VII vs Cothill
United v Cothill 1-0 (Nicholas M)
The training session on the day preceding match day was a great opportunity to put in place some basic football philosophy, play the ball along the ground and out wide. United were the first team, in the triangular competition, to adopt this effectively. Pilgrim’s certainly had the better chances, but only Nocholas managed to sneak one in.
The United v City match was well-fought, but again, not enough shooting opportunities were created by either team, leaving the score a scoreless stalemate.
Colts City VII vs Cothill 1-3 (Ivor L)
Cothill started this encounter the brighter of the two teams, perhaps having the break between matches helped. Either way, Cothill managed to squeeze in a couple of goals from tight positions. At 3-0 down and with five minutes to go, Pilgrims’ suddenly sprang into life and were buoyed up by the pleasing finish from Ivor, they looked set to work their way back, only to run out of time. AA
Foals A VII vs Cothill
Won 4-0
A super game that saw Pilgrims' play some great football. Sensible positional awareness and a resolute defence meant Cothill never really threatened the Pilgrims’ goal. Finley N was sharp on the wing and managed to score himself two well-taken goals. Connor also continued his scoring streak and Charlie got a well-deserved goal after a man of the match performance. It has been a pleasure to see the boys progressing and this was a standout performance of the season. Well played chaps. JB
Foals B VII vs Cothill Drew 1-1 (Benji 1)
I know that the ‘film titles’ theme was last week, but Saturday’s fixture against Cothill saw an evenly matched fixture between two teams with some excellent football kick-started with an absolute screecher from a free kick from Bend-It-Like-Benji. High on the euphoria of the goal, Pilgrims’ play then developed enormously as the match went on, with some excellent defending as always from Jacob Stiles and William Wang in goal. Sadly, with 5 minutes to go, some miscommunication and a slight lack in focus led to a penalty called in the box for Cothill, with their striker putting in a superb shot on target leaving very little that Rafe, who had been excellent in goal in the second half, could do to stop. A really encouraging display though, from a team which are truly developing as the season progresses. Well done all. CAL.

U9 Stroud Tournament
We had a fantastic afternoon at the Stroud Under 9 tournament with some excellent football on display. Our score-card read – won 2, drawn 3, lost 1. We ended up with nine points, narrowly missing out on second place, who scored 11 points. Two of the drawn games were nil - nil, and in truth, we had a hat full of chances to win the games. However, that would not have been enough to have won the tournament – as an impressive Twyford side won all their games without conceding a goal! We lost 2 – nil to them in our first match, which was a tight game early on. We really struggled for goals scoring just four in the tournament, with two nil – nil’s in our first 3 games. However, as the tournament went on, we managed a 1 – 1, a 2 – nil win, and a 1 – nil win against Pilgrims' B. I was really proud of how the B team played in that game, our last of the day. They worked really hard and showed tremendous team spirit, and the A’s certainly didn’t have it all their own way.
Baxter and Patrick were amongst the goalscorers again, and a special mention to Casper, who played brilliantly in his first few games in the A’s, tirelessly roaming around the pitch, snuffing out dangerous situations. An excellent debut. SLT
U9C VII vs Cothill
Triangular Lost 2-0 and 3-1 (George I)
This was an excellent opportunity for our boys as we were able to play two nearly full fixtures against similar ability opposition. We didn’t get the wins on the board but Pilgrims’ weren’t to be London when the ball fell to George I for him to score a fantastic goal in the second game. Well-played to all. It certainly was a fun occasion, and we learned a bit more about our positioning in a match. AJS
