Hampshire KO cup Round 1 at The Romsey School
Year 7 are the Year group that continues to impress. They may not have a bevy of record breakers amongst their ranks, but time and time again we go to events and (over)perform. The success from the cross-country season and enthusiasm for running has carried over into the athletics season.
Thursday saw us compete in round 1 of the Hampshire School’s KO cup, divided into group stages Pilgrims’ faced off in track events against King’s Winchester, Testwood, Ringwood School, Test Valley, and the hosts Romsey School, all of which boast massive Year group numbers in comparison. The competition works on a points system the two top teams progress to the Semi-Finals of the up competition.
Our team of 8 boys were amazing! Events, times, and positions listed below (A and B sprints races were run separately). Some stellar times in the 600m and 1000m were a particular highlight for me. Bertie W’s time of 1:58 is good enough for an ESAA “Elite” award and James P ran faster than I have ever witnessed to earn a time of 2:03, good enough for a “Platinum” award. Fraser N completed his 1km race in 3:36 and Olly P ran an impressive 3:46 in his 1km race.
Overall, Pilgrims’ finished 2nd with 50 points and as a result will progress to the Semi-Finals (date TBC). Well done boys!

Winchester RFC U13 on tour!
Otto and Dominic in Year 8 had a fabulous trip to the Tigers Rugby challenge in Minehead this weekend representing Winchester RFC U13s.
Games were tough, physical and hard fought with the boys coming up against extremely strong (and big!) teams, notably from Wales.
Nonetheless, Winchester won the Plate group and came home with silverware, individual medals for all the boys and more importantly some great memories and rugby experiences.

Pilgrims’ 1st XI v Westbourne House
20 overs
Westbourne 89/7
Pilgrims’ 71/8 (Sammy Q 38 n/o)
Pilgrims’ lost by 18 runs
This was a fascinating game of cricket, with control and hold on the game changing hands frequently. Pilgrims’ 1st XI put on another strong bowling performance. A combination of tight bowling and a dynamic fielding set up saw the hosts reduced to 54/4 off 15 overs. Sammy Q had another good game with the bat and ball, going for just 14 runs off his 4 overs. Westbourne played some attacking cricket in their final few overs, to push their team score up to 89. As we left the field for tea, Pilgrims’ found themselves in a comfortable position. Still, this was just half the job done.
Our batting innings made for slightly harder viewing. Westbourne openers took some key early scalps, which made the rest of our innings a struggle. Momentum had swung, but there was a clear determination from the middle order batsmen. The charge was led by Sammy Q, who batted a patient and sensible innings. Olly P and Seb B offered some support, rotating the strike nicely. Similar to Westbourne’s innings, Sammy kicked on with 5 overs to go, showing an expansive shot selection which unsettled the bowling attack. Suddenly, there was optimism in our run chase and some nerves shown by Westbourne. Sadly, we couldn’t quite reach the target. Sammy showed excellent composure and how to build an innings. MTG
2nd XI v Westbourne House
20 overs
Pilgrims’ 67 for 5 (Ben A 21no)
Farleigh 70 for 1
Pilgrims’ lost by 9 wickets
Despite the result, this was a cracking afternoon. Reduced by both exams and illness, a rather scratch 2nd XI was put together to face one of our traditionally strongest rivals. It helped that the weather was perfect, sunny but not too hot. Having lost the toss and been put in, we made sensible and steady progress against a strong bowling line up. All batted sensibly and well, defending when first in and trying to move the score on when well set (though this was difficult against a very good bowling unit). Late runs were added by Ben A (21no) and he was by far the busiest batsman. Westborne had two very strong openers, who quickly got them on the way to the total. However, I was very pleased with how the boys bowled and fielded, and they could not have done much more. I was especially pleased with the performance of some boys who would normally be in the 3rd XI; they have given me some selection headaches moving forward! ASD
3rds v Westbourne House
20 Overs
Lost
Westbourne 62 for 3 (14 overs)
Pilgrims’ 57 for 8 (20 overs)
Pilgrims’ took the bat first and were unfortunately slow to get going. Some safe batting so very few early wickets but also very few runs. A few extras from some wayward Westbourne bowling helped the score tick along. James H came into the order late on and notched a few, but the boys struggled to hit boundaries and were scoring the odd single here and there. A total of 57.
After Tea, Pilgrims' fielded very well, Louis B put in a fantastic performance and Bertie C also lead by example. The consistent bowling from our boys was very impressive, However the nice straight ball seemed to help Westbourne who had a few high-quality batsmen who were able to strike the ball to the boundary regularly. The Pilgrims total of 57 was chased down quickly and in the 14th over, another 4 from Westbourne clinched the win.
A grand effort from Pilgrims’. WD
Pilgrims’ Colts A v Westbourne House
20 overs
Westbourne 124/8 from 20 overs (Jacob H. 3-16)
Pilgrims’ 92/8 from 20 overs (Rian D. 20, Zachary M. 20)
Pilgrims’ lost by 32 runs
Pilgrims’ started the match very brightly with Jacob bowling a tidy double-wicket maiden with consistent and accurate line and length. Rian found good rhythm at the other end and made scoring opportunities rare for Westbourne. Westbourne found themselves under some pressure by the end of the fifth over on 14/4. Westbourne needed a big partnership, and they got one with an 87-run partnership over the next ten overs. Westbourne capitalised on the final three overs by smacking over thirty runs – which incidentally was the winning margin between the two teams. The start to the Pilgrims’ chase was similar to that of Westbourne’s with some early wickets fallings, but for Pilgrims' the wickets kept falling and Westbourne gradually strangled the Pilgrims’ reply. Debutant Zachary batted well and warranted his promotion. Despite losing, Pilgrims’ should be commended for the amount of runs they scored – nearly twice that from the previous week, and they managed to bat out the full 20 overs; these are two big steps forward. Pilgrims’ Colts B v Westbourne House
Pilgrims’ 76/6 (20 overs) - Yashk (10), Charlie (10)
Westbourne House 77/5 (15 overs) - David (3/7)
Pilgrims’ lost by 5 wickets
It was a beautiful afternoon for cricket, and the Colts Bs arrived at Westbourne House eager to improve on the previous week’s performance.
Pilgrims’ lost the toss and were put into bat first. The first two wickets fell quite quickly, after which Yashk and Thomas were able to steady the ship somewhat. Yashk scored 10 runs, which included a well-struck four. Unfortunately he succumbed to a well-directed full-toss and was bowled shortly after. Charlie was able to continue the momentum and scored 10 runs as well, which included two very entertaining trips to the boundary for the opposition. Pilgrims’ completed their innings on 76/6 in their 20 overs, with ‘Extras’ being the highest scorer on the day.
Westbourne House replied with confidence, and were able to put runs on the board fairly quickly. David was the star bowler on the day, taking 3/7 on in his two overs with the ball. Westbourne House were able to score 77 runs in 15 overs with 5 wickets in hand to secure a win on this occasion.
The Pilgrims’ Colts Bs should be commended for a much-improved performance, and for playing in a very positive manner. CXC
Foals A v Westbourne House
Westbourne 120-5 (20 overs)
Pilgrims’ 63 all out (14.2 overs) (Barney 20)
Pilgrims’ lost the match by 57 runs
A welcome appearance from the sunshine this afternoon set the stage for another impressive afternoon’s cricket from this developing Foals A side. Westbourne won the toss and elected to bat and, with the conditions working in their favour, amassed a decent total on a firm pitch. Some tight bowling in the opening overs kept the scoreline to a respectable level, with Archie picking up an early wicket in the first ball of the second over and Barney managing a tremendous wicket maiden in his second over. However a few leaky extras, some lapses of attention in the field and a well-drilled Westbourne No.3 pushed the run rate higher in the middle overs. Some accurate bowling from Lucas, who has a knack for pulling wickets out of a hat, a fantastic run-out from Barney at midwicket and a superb caught-and-bowled from Boris in the penultimate ball ended the Westbourne innings on 120-5, leaving Pilgrims’ with a steep, but certainly gettable, 6 runs per over.
Going into bat, the boys were reminded of the need to put on partnerships together, rather than giving their wickets away or focussing too much on the required total. I was extremely impressed with how each pair met this target with very few wickets being ‘gifted’ to the opposition (particularly when faced with some ‘chippy’ noise in the field!) Barney formed the anchor of the batting order at No.3 with an extremely impressive Captain’s Innings of 20, putting together a good partnership with Christian, Archie and Boris respectively. In the end, though, the Westbourne bowlers proved too strong on this occasion and the final wicket fell with the score on 63. I do, however, think back to our match two weeks prior, when wickets fell in quick succession against strong bowling, and little to no partnerships were being formed. This was, in comparison, a much improved batting display with the boys becoming accustomed to the ‘pressure cooker’ of the batting green. The boys should take great comfort from how much they are progressing as a team, and the lessons they are learning from each match that is played. CAL
Foals B v Westbourne House
15 Overs
Pilgrims 31 for 2 (15 Overs)
Westbourne 47 (15 Overs)
Pilgrims’ lost by 16 runs
Today's game against Westbourne was a great representation of youth cricket. All round both sets of boys played with concentration and intensity, while still maintaining a cheerful and sportsmanlike mood that both myself and Westbourne’s coach noticed. Pilgrims were up to bat in the first innings. Getting off to a slightly slow start due to Westbourne's solid bowling, however as the innings progressed the boys started to display some good striking and running skills which got us to 231 runs by the end. Shoutout to Austin S for striking two fours and a few singles and doubles during his three over stint, even getting compliments from Westbourne staff and parents after the match. Going into the second innings, spirits were high. I had talked to the boys about the importance of backing up and bowling legal balls to ensure to not give away too many extra runs and they seemed raring to go. However, Westbourne got off to a strong start despite some great bowling and fielding from the boys, and as we neared the end of the innings Westbourne found themselves about 20 runs ahead. This is when both Farid A and Theo M were able to produce some lethal bowling getting 2 back-to-back wickets each in their respective overs. Tightening up the game to produce a great finish to the match. While the Pilgrims were not able to come through with the win in the end, I think both sets of boys were happy to have a good day of cricket in the sun. Good job boys! EJG

U9 A XIII v Farleigh
To follow next week....
U9 Seawolves v Farleigh
All the boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves during our match against Farleigh. Each boy had the opportunity to demonstrate both their batting and bowling ability during this game. Each pair that came into bat scored runs and added to our total, with Cameron S managing to hit an impressive 4! At the end of our batting innings our total was 175 (having started on 100). We struggled for consistency with our bowling, and all the boys need to continue to practise this. However, there were moments of quality, with Marek continuing to improve his technique and accuracy when bowling. Farleigh however surpassed our total and ended up on 201 runs. This was another step in our boys’ development, and with each match comes improved skills and understanding of the game. Well done to all involved. TMH
U9 Sandstorm v Farleigh
Pilgrims’: 229
Farleigh: 260
Pilgrims’ lost by 31 runs
A fabulous match for a sunny Thursday afternoon at Farleigh school! Pilgrims’ boys took to the field batting first, Charlie and Rio opened and set a fabulous tone for the game. Perseverance continued to be displayed throughout the inning as pilgrims’ boys made steady gains against a formidable bowling team. Although only facing two overs per batting team, they were able to amass a respectable score that produced a competitive spirit as Farleigh took to batting. The boys particularly shone in their fielding and bowling technique, focusing on not giving runs away through reducing the amount of wide balls. A particular highlight was the three wickets scored by Will W and Rio with Rio also catching out a batsman straight after Will had scored a wicket! The team shows great promise and I look forward to seeing how they progress throughout the season. EOD
U8A VIII v Farleigh
Pilgrims’ - 312
Farleigh - 307
Pilgrims’ won by 5 runs
What a match! Pilgrims' did brilliantly well in their first ever fixture. The batting in particular was very impressive. An excellent opening partnership of 30 runs from George and Alfred set the tone, with others keeping the score very healthy. Abhinav and Edward then notched a stunning 50 between them, including a wonderful six from Abhinav. At the break 312 looked like a winning score. Farleigh then had their part to play and scored well! The Pilgrims’ boys looked lively and sharp in the field, Rafe H took an excellent catch, possibly the highlight of the match! Towards the end of the innings, Pilgrims’ began to go a little wayward with their bowling, gifting Farleigh a few extra runs, meaning the scores became very close! An exciting finish meant Farleigh were still able to chase the Pilgrims’ score down in the final over! Winston G stepped up and delivered 3 dot balls which eased the tension and Farleigh came up just short! A wonderful start to this team's cricket journey! Well done boys! JB
U8 Scorchers v Farleigh
Pilgrims' 88
Farleigh 110
Pilgrims' Lost by 22 runs
Fun in the sun was had by all I think on this joyous afternoon down on Wolvsey. Pilgrims’ batted first and amassed a daring 88, including a couple of lovely fours from Anthony and Teddy, our first pair, and by Baxter coming in towards the end. All of the boys seemed to be developing in confidence in every shot that was played, and it was great to see so many smiles on faces coming out to the middle. Giving everyone a turn to bowl, Farleigh managed to creep past our total by the time the final pair came to the wicket (with a little help from Mr Extras along the way). Targets going forwards include accurate bowling, backing up in the field and strong and definite calling between the wickets. Well done all. CAL
U8 Storm v Farleigh
Pilgrims’ 303
Farleigh 261
Pilgrims’ won by 42 runs
The Pilgrims’ boys batted well and ran between the stumps clinically, if cautiously. We only lost the two wickets at five runs each which meant our score gathered momentum through the innings. I was pleased with the bowling which, on the whole, was accurate as we look to develop a bit more pace and length. Farleigh, in comparison, lost five wickets which disrupted their run chase. Three of these were from run outs, showing we were lively in the field. Well done on this first performance! AJS
