On Friday 1 July, we have our Pre-Prep Sports Day and on Saturday 2 July, Inter-Set Athletics takes place on our Wolvesey Playing fields. This year, we are back to our regular running of the event, in that I mean, there will be no covid restricted spectator pens!
I will be writing with further detail but, in brief, the morning session is for the juniors and, following lunch, the afternoon session is for the seniors. You can expect some changes to the events on the day. Each pupil will be able to take part in a minimum of three events – a run, a jump and a throw, as before. However, the run will be the 75m or 100m depending on age group, culminating in a final later in the session. Then athletes can do long jump and vortex howler for the juniors and shot for the seniors.
Beyond the three events, pupils may be selected for a further event and beyond this, for one of the two relays they may be eligible for. So, that’s a maximum of five events. I will be publicising the teams to the Sets, so they can familiarise themselves with the programme and make some swaps if required. I’m really looking forward to it as it is one of the highlights of the Pilgrims’ sporting calendar!
Match reports from Wednesday 15 June
U12 v Farleigh U12/13
20 Over Match
Pilgrims’ 73-9 Rory K 23, Cyrus T 24
Farleigh 74-3
Pilgrims’ Lost by 7 Wickets
The boys found it difficult to score freely against an accurate bowling attack; only Rory (23) and Cyrus (24) made a significant contribution; the nine other batsman mustered only five runs between them. Extras (20) were the next highest total. In reply, Farleigh made short work of overhauling the 73 runs required to win; one of their openers smashed a rapid fire 35 before retiring. Charles L clean bowled two batsmen giving our boys something to cheer before Farleigh hit the winning runs off the last ball of the ninth over. AW
Colts B v Farleigh
20 over match
Farleigh 152/6 (Minwoo C. 2/2, Felix F. 1/16, Fraser N. 1/16, Tristan S. 1/14, Ben A. 1/13
Pilgrims’ 77/8 (Neil C. 12, Cameron J. 13)
Lost by 75 runs
The Colts Bs played a competitive game of cricket and put on a very nuggety performance.
Farleigh batted first and scored a total of 152/6, their opening batsmen scoring freely for the first 9 overs. Our bowlers regained some composure and found the right line to start taking wickets at regular intervals from this point. Minwoo C took a very respectable 2/2, and was most certainly the bowler of the day for Pilgrims’.
After the break, Pilgrims’ went in to bat, and looked very steady. The unfortunate loss of Ben A’s wicket in the third over to an excellent delivery, put the brakes on a bit, and our boys ended up batting quite conservatively. Cameron J and Neil C were the batsmen of the day for Pilgrims’, scoring 13 and 12 runs respectively.
Unfortunately, the slow run rate led to Pilgrims’ only replying with 77/8 off 20 overs. Farleigh won this encounter by 75 runs. CXC
Colts C v Farleigh
20 over match
Pilgrims’ 285
Farleigh 286 (16 overs)
Lost
Pilgrims’ notched their best total of the season with some excellent batting from Ayden C and Harry K. It was a good performance and a score that put the boys in a good position going into match tea. Farleigh were also strong with the bat however and managed to sneak past the Pilgrims’ total in the 16th over. A disappointing result, but a very positive performance from the boys who were happy with how they performed. Well done chaps.
Foals A XI v Farleigh
Pilgrims 92-3 (Charles N 48*) (20 overs)
Farleigh 93-2 (17.4 overs)
Pilgrims’ lost by 8 wickets
On a lovely, hot afternoon, in front of the Wolvesey ruins and many parents, the Foals A played out a tough match in which they showed grit and skills.
It started with a great innings by Charles, scoring 48* and carrying his bat through the innings. He was well-supported, but scoring was tough. 92 was a great effort giving the quality of the bowling but was going to be tough to defend.
And so it turned out to be, although we gave it a good shot. There was great bowling from Bertie, Max and Alfie, the best they have bowled all season. But there was too much loose stuff and the Farleigh batters were wise and skilled in their running between the wickets.
The better team won, but Pilgrims’ are a far better team than they were in their first match. Well done and congratulations on a season where more matches were won than lost. MDS
Foals B XI v Farleigh
Farleigh 137-9
Pilgrims 100- 7
Pilgrims’ lost by 37 runs
There wasn’t actually a huge amount between these two sides, especially considering Farleigh came with 8, but then re-bowled and batted their best players! However, our fielding let us down and the bowling at the death cost us vital runs. 137 felt like a big target, but Farleigh showed that any kind of bat on ball often ended up with the ball going to the boundary. In truth, we didn’t hit the bad balls to the boundary enough, although Seth T made a bright 12 and Rupert B an impressive 19*, and we were always slightly behind the run rate. The boys battled commendably till the end though and didn’t go down without a fight. Well done to all. WD
Foals C XI v Farleigh
18 Over Match
Farleigh 327-5
Pilgrims’ 298-3 (Leo L 17*)
Pilgrims’ lost by 29 runs
This was a delightful cricket match. In taking this team for the first time in a while, I was struck at the improvement in bowling, in particular, which enhanced the quality of the game. With Farleigh batting first, the Foals had them a bit stuck in the doldrums. Three wickets in the first four overs kept pegging Farleigh back as they lost five runs for each wicket. There was a lovely run out from Rafael C, directly followed by a wicket bowled by Zach S – two wickets in two balls! Shortly after Rafael took another wicket, this time with his bowling. After eight overs, Farleigh had only made twenty runs (starting on 200).
Just one more wicket followed in the second half of the innings. Thomas K’s straight bowling claimed that one. However, the wickets dried up and Farleigh’s batting accelerated with some big hitters finding the boundary, and they cruised up to 327.
In reply, the Foals realised the short boundary attributed to Farleigh’s large total, and it was Travis S who provided the shot of confidence by finding the boundary twice with lovely drives through long off. Leo L maintained that momentum, finding the boundary regularly. The game was in the balance until the end of the fourteenth over, after which we missed the need to accelerate the run rate, as Farleigh had done. Nevertheless, this was a good contest and a pleasing afternoon. AJS
U9 A v Farleigh (TheHundred)
Farleigh 91
Pilgrims 58
Pilgrims lost by 33 runs
Pilgrims’ U9 A were good value against Farleigh. Both sides benefitted from knowing the opposition well at this stage of the season. Pilgrims’ batted first, and although played some lovely shots and scored well, we unfortunately lost a couple of vital wickets and crucial times. This stemmed our progress in the match. Edward W and Archie W kicked on the last 3-4 overs, running well between the wickets and utilising the gaps in the field. Farleigh’s middle order were dangerous, capitalising on miss-fields and any lose bowling. Sadly, the game went away from us, however, many positives should be taken. We looked comfortable and confident when batting, displaying solid technique and desire to score. Some substantial progress made in the final few weeks, well done. MTG
U9 Seawolves v Farleigh
Pilgirims’ 248 - 2
Farleigh 322-2?
Lost by 76 runs.?
Pilgrims' batted first and put up a score of 248 in their innings. Pilgrims' struggled to get a decent score on with the bat in hand, scoring only 13 in 4 overs. Ralph M, however found his time at the crease rather easy, boosting Pilgrims' up to 31 with the help of his partner Hugo W. With all the pairs having had a decent attempt, Pilgrims' wrapped up the innings on 248.?
Farleigh found the target rather easy, ending the chase in just 5 overs. Hugo W, again bowler of the day, letting 0 runs go towards the opposing team, while taking a wicket. Farleigh however, caught up but didn’t stop at that. Our bowlers struggling to contain the batsmen. With boundaries all round, the game came to a close with Farleigh scoring 322 for 2.
From a coaching perspective, improvement is obvious, which at the end of the day is the goal. Pilgrims' v Farleigh was won and lost based on focus and concentration in the field of play. Nevertheless, the boys enjoyed a day out in the sun. JU
