Well done to the Pilgrims’ athletes who took part at the Radley Athletic competition before half-term. Particular congratulation to Farid A (800m), Sebastian N (800m, 1500m), Osamede A (100m, High Jump, Shot) who won their respective events.
Congratulations to Orson and Rohan who play for Littleton Junior Spartak. They won their division of the Southampton and District Tyro Football League (with 14 matches played, 12 wins, 1 draw and only 1 loss). They have been rewarded with possession of this fine new trophy!
Thank you to Mr E who sent this image of his son, Luke. Inspiration for the next generation of Pilgrims’ sailors!

This week is busy with athletics and swimming events. On Friday afternoon, athletes from Year 6 and up are competing at Farleigh School in the afternoon. On Saturday, athletes from Years 3-5 are competing at Walhampton and on Friday morning, we have a few swimmers from Year 6 at our new leisure centre at Bar End for the Winchester Schools swimming gala. Teams will be published on SOCS shortly.
Cricket matches are detailed below for the week. Please note that matches with Prince’s Mead tomorrow start at 1400, and the ones with Farleigh at the regular time of 1430. Also, the Colts A match is at Easton CC and the Foals A match is at St Cross CC.
Unfortunately, owing to the throes of Common Entrance exams in the background, it has been decided that our best match up with Farleigh for the two XIs that were scheduled for U13 cricket was the 1st XI and the 3rd/4th XI – apologies that the 2nds miss out. They will get some valuable net time in preparation for Saturday’s match with Elstree.
On Thursday afternoon, Year 3 and 4 are in action with Prince’s Mead. Just to note, the U9 Sixers will be playing PM U8D away. This has been to ensure every player could be included, in the best way we thought possible, across the two year groups.
On Saturday, we have matches with Elstree. Please find further details on SOCS via My School Portal.

Match reports from Wednesday 18 May
2nd XI v Walhampton
20 overs
Pilgrims’ 76 for 5 (Rory K 20 no, Cyrus T 17)
Walhampton 64 all out (Nikhil Dh 10-2, Rohan F 10-2, Alex B 9-3, Felix C 13-1)
Pilgrims’ won by 11 runs
A highly entertaining, and interesting, game. We batted well, but our calling and running was atrocious (I do not use that word lightly!). Despite feeling like we were always in control, we left a good 20 runs out there. I said to the boys in the interval that we would need to bowl and field well; for the first four overs we bowled ok, but our fielding was not up to scratch. This was compounded by the fact that Walhampton gave us a lesson in ‘drop and run’ cricket; on 20 for none after 4 overs, it looked like we were in real trouble. And then it all change. Nikhil Dh (10 for 2 from four overs) came on, followed by Felix C (13 for 1 from four overs), and suddenly we looked alive in the field. Wickets fell regularly, and Rohan F (10 for 2) and Alex B (9 for 3) continued the squeeze, and it looked like we would win easily. And yet it seesawed again; Walhampton’s number 4 and number 8 came together and hit some big shots to take them to 59 for 6. Could the game really be lost? A couple of quick wickets however and suddenly the game was all over. Phew. ASD
Match reports from Saturday 21 May
2nd XI v Twyford 20 overs
Twyford 99 for 9 (Jinmo K 7 for 3, Nikhil Dh 11-2)
Pilgrims’33 all out
Pilgrims’ lost by 66 runs
A frustrating game this one. Twyford won the toss and decided to bat Pilgrims’ bowled and fielded excellently for the first 7 overs and had Twyford reeling on 20 for 4, with Nikhil Dh excellent with 11 for 2. However, we let Twyford off the hook somewhat and allowed their 5th wicket pair to rebuild to 84 for 5. Only some good late over bowling from Jinmo K (7 for 3) restricted Twyford to under 100. We knew that we needed to bat well, but unfortunately the top order got out trying to get a strong start (some silly swipes across the line) and we soon found ourselves 5 for 5! Only a dogged 11no from Alex B saw us hold them up, and we were bowled out for a disappointing 33. ASD
Match reports from Wednesday 25 May
1st XI v Winchester College U14
20 Over Match
Pilgrims’ 115-3, Ollie M 59, George C 34*
Winchester College 119-9 (Silas K 3-24, Ollie M 2-16, James Z 2-21)
Pilgrims’ lost by 1 wicket
Playing a mixed A/B U14 team that included four OPs, the boys equipped themselves extremely well in what was a belter of a game of cricket. Batting first, we had an early set back with an unfortunate run out but dug in with Ollie M (59) and George C (34*) against a mixture of excellent bowling and some more friendly fare ultimately setting a total of 116 to win.
Our defence began really well with Silas K taking 3 wickets in his first three overs. Win Coll stayed with the required run rate but kept losing wickets to be 53-7 after ten overs. A good partnership got them to 87-7 with five to go at nearly 6 an over asking rate. Would scoreboard pressure cause some wobbles in the batting? Yes it did, as firstly Ollie M bowled their number seven for 28, then Hugo S ran out the number nine, for 17, with a very sharp piece of fielding. With three overs left to get 19 runs but with only one wicket remaining the game was there for the taking by either side. With the game still alive with two balls to go it was Win Coll who scrambled over the line to win by one wicket, greeted by a much-relieved cheer from their dressing room. This was an excellent fielding and bowling performance by our boys, Ollie M showed excellent decision-making skills as captain, which is never easy when matches get really tight. AW

2nd XI v Winchester College U14
20 Over Match
Winchester College 100 all out (Ollie R 3-16, Felix C 3-10)
Pilgrims’ 80 all out
Pilgrims’ lost by 20 runs
The 2nd XI started brightly having put the College into bat. The fielding performance was tight and lively, with a strong bowling attack. The breakthrough came in the fourth over with Nikhil Dh clean bowling the first batsman, followed up in the same over with a catch at mid-wicket by Ollie R, putting the College at 19-2. Barring a healthy batting stint by OP Ollie S, wickets fell regularly with a catch from Nikhil Dh from the bowling of Nikhil Du, Ollie R claimed a three-for, all clean-bowled. Felix C also claimed a three-for, supported in one of his wickets with a second catch from Ollie R. Mayin D got just reward for his spin-bowling with an LBW. The College were out for a round 100 in the eighteenth over.
The target seemed achievable, nevertheless, the sides mirrored each other in their relative batting and bowling strengths. As such, the College similarly broke through in the fourth over, with wickets regularly falling thereafter. Cyrus T made a start with 12, but we collapsed to 47 for 9. My pleas for the final pair to dig in and start again were thankfully taken on board by Ollie R and Nikhil Dh as the tail wagged, and they made a final wicket stand of 33. This got us to a respectable 80 all out – just twenty runs short. Above all, I really enjoyed my temporary shift in charge of the 2nds, especially with the match being exciting and eventful – the team was fantastic company. AJS
3rd XI v Stroud
20 overs
Pilgrims’ 112-4 from 20 overs (Chris H 24*)
Stroud 105-9 from 20 overs (Freddie 4-4)
Pilgrims’ won by 7 runs
This was an excellent, close, nail-biting game that ebbed and flowed throughout! We lost the toss and were put into bat on a good wicket and, for the first time this season, we started relatively brightly. Monty and Rohan T looked to put away the bad ball before Monty was unluck to be caught hitting over the top of mid-off. But we were only one wicket down after 8 overs, before Rohan T and Rohan F fell in fairly quick succession. The arrival of Freddie and Chris H added some impetus at the end of our innings, Chris batting with authority to take us to a respectable but gettable 112. It looked like our cautious optimism was going to be short-lived as the Stroud openers looked very comfortable, their No. 1 made a confident 30* before retiring. That heralded a change in fortune for us, with Rufus removing the other Stroud opener, before Rohan T took two quick wickets and the Pilgrims’ dander was well and truly up! Felix M put the brakes on with some very tidy bowling and all of a sudden, it was ours to lose. Then came the moment of the match: Freddie F took a hat trick in his first over, bowling two through the gate and getting a run out with the third to end with figures of 4-4. Stroud needed 16 off the last over which was always going to be a stretch, but Charlie P bowled tidily to ensure it was managed calmly. An excellent, close game and a brilliant one to come out on top of. Well done to all. WD
4th XI v Stroud
Pilgrims 333
Stroud 240
Pilgrims won by 93 runs
An excellent match, and the boys played superbly. Put into bat, Theo S and Alex H got us off to a strong start, with 38 runs from the 4 overs. Santi F and Ben H, and then Alex A and Timothee H, then Jaden P and Matteo L batted nicely to keep the score ticking along; Nye B and Theo S (out for his second bat) finished things off with a few big shots to take us to +133 runs from our twenty overs. The 4th XI were excellent in the field and bowled superbly, with Matteo L the pick of the bowlers. Wickets were regularly taken to keep the score down and Stroud never got anywhere near the target. Well played all round and a really lovely afternoon’s cricket. ASD
Colts A v Stroud
16 over match (reduced from 20 overs due to inclement weather)
Pilgrims’ 92-5 from 16 overs (Aditya S. 40*)
Stroud 56-8 from 16 overs (Barnaby D. 3-4; Sam Q. 2-3, George S. 2-8)
Pilgrims’ won by 36 runs
Pilgrims' were set the target of breaking the illusive 100-run barrier, and were it not for the mid-afternoon rain it would have been achieved, however it was not the best start. Facing some tame bowling, the Pilgrims' top order failed to capitalise and instead surrendered their wickets due to poor shot selection, not getting on the front foot, and not taking time to ‘get in’. After 7 overs, at 25-4, things were looking bleak, but as so often has happened this season, skipper Aditya strolled out and drove the team forward. He finished with another not out score (40), and it should not be overlooked the next highest score by any player in either team was 6! In reply, Stroud struggled with the accuracy and consistency of the Pilgrims' bowling, and interestingly the teams were level after 7 overs, but the Stroud reply fizzled out giving the majority of Colts the chance to bowl two overs. AA
Colts B report to follow.
Colts C v Stroud
Soft ball pairs
15 overs
Pilgrims’ 85 for 1
Stroud 45 for 6
Pilgrims’ won by 40 runs
Pilgrims’ were strong throughout this match despite the miserable rain. Batting first, Harry K and George S got off to a solid start scoring a handy 25 runs between them. Ayden C also batted well along with steady scoring from Alfie W and Alex W. A score of 85 from 15 overs looked very healthy.
After match tea, Pilgrims’ continued their good form with some accurate bowling and effective fielding. Stroud couldn't really get into a scoring run and Pilgrims’ kept the run rate low, easing to victory! Well done boys! JB
Foals A v Stroud
20 overs hardball pairs
Pilgrims' 219
Stroud 132 (Sam O 3-10, Rhian D 2-9)
Pilgrims’ won by 87 runs
A strong batting effort saw all the pairs achieve about 20 runs each - a real team effort. We only lost 2 wickets and hit plenty of boundaries. It was a very competitive score and one that set up a second half to the game.
Sam took 2 wickets in his first over, meaning Stroud were reeling right from the off. Everyone has a bowl, and we even had the luxury of not using two of our best bowlers more than once. Everyone did their bit, and there were two run-outs. There were several catches, but most of the 15 wickets were bowled.
There were a few mistakes in the field, and overthrows are something we need to guard against. Nonetheless, it was a strong win, and we head into the break on a high. MDS
Foals B report to follow.
