We’ve been enjoying this dry start to the term, even if the grounds could do with a bit of rain! As we run in to the exeat, there is a busy set of cricket fixtures on Wednesday, detailed below.

Water polo in Senior Games on Monday
There have been some amendments to the original set of fixture venues which have also been emailed to parents, so here is the revised list which is now reflected on SOCS.
- Winchester College are hosting the 1sts and Colts A.
- The U9 Sandstorm and Seawolves matches are also on Winchester College pitches - about halfway down Garnier Road. There is parking there (carefully, up to the hedgerow), and enter through the gate on the right-hand side. I am grateful to the College for accommodating us.
Please click on the venue map icon on SOCS to help you locate the Winchester College venues.
There are two Foals C teams, please check SOCS for team list and venue.

Match reports from Wednesday 4 May
1st XI v Westbourne House
Lost by 38 runs
Westbourne House 145-3
Pilgrims 107 All Out (Ollie M 50)
Westbourne batted with real confidence, one of their openers hit a powerful half century in quick time, punishing anything that was off-line or short. This gave them a tremendous start of 74 from the first ten overs. Despite our fielding being sharp and general team spirit positive, WH continued to pile on the runs, their number 4 crashed a quick 36 as they posted a total of 145-3. Thomas R was the pick of our bowlers, taking 1 for 12 from his four overs – a great debut!
In reply, we lost a wicket in the first over but recovered well with a partnership of 50 between Ollie M (50) and Thomas R (20). In fact, we were ahead of WH after six overs. After Ollie was out for an excellent half century, we just could not sustain the required run rate and lost regular wickets as the middle and lower order batsmen had a good go. Teddy Mc (12) and Silas K (11) contributed well to our run chase. We were bowled out for 107 in the final over. AW
3rd XI v Westbourne
Lost by 47 runs
Westbourne 134-6
Pilgrims’ 87 all out (Nikhil D 21)
There was a healthy, noisy dollop of optimism on the minibus ahead of our first match of the season! It’s always exciting to see how boys cope in competitive fixtures and to see whether they can transfer the skills they’ve been working on over the last couple of weeks into match conditions. We lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Wickets fell regularly, which was very exciting! Gabriel D bowled particularly well, showing how line and length will do for most, rather than sheer pace, picking up two wickets in his two overs. Our fielding was largely good, typified by Harry H who kept tidily throughout, and we took all the catches that came our way. However, a large partnership towards the end took Westbourne to 134, which seemed like a big, although not insurmountable challenge. What followed highlighted the work we need to do, and that is on our inability to score runs. Westbourne’s opener was quick but not unplayable, but sadly did too much for Harry H, and Cyrus who looked confident before being well caught at backward square leg. Resistance came from Rohan T who made a nurdle-y 16 and Nikhil D who made 21, but our top order collapse sadly left us with too much to do, and we were always behind the run rate. There’s plenty to build on and some bright performances, especially in the field, but scoring runs is going to be crucial to the future success of this team. Well done to all on a good first outing! WD
Colts A v Westbourne House
Westbourne House 92 all out (Barnaby D 4-2) from 18.3 overs
Pilgrims’ 93-3 from 13.5 overs
Pilgrims’ won by 7 wickets
In hindsight, one could suggest this match was won by Pilgrims’ in the first 5 overs of the Westbourne innings, with the score being 9/2. The Pilgrims’ bowlers were shrewd in their control with some bowlers opting to pitch it short of a length, making scoring tricky, others resorted to a nagging line and length. Every fielder bowled two overs each and all showed a good degree of control, despite the minimal coaching time accrued so far. Pilgrims’ were lively in the field, although this was not an immaculate performance, with some catches dropped, but most being taken. The batting also showed good depth, with Sam Q (36) and Barnaby D (14*) complementing each other's batting style in their fruitful 45-run partnership; Sam powerful in front of wicket, while Barnaby was tenacious and pierced the field regularly. This was a very welcome victory and a fantastic way to start the new season. AA

Barnaby D scores the winning runs for Colts A
Colts B v Westbourne House
Westbourne House: 107/4 (20 overs)
Pilgrims’: 105/9 (20 overs)
Pilgrims’ lost by 2 runs
The St Cross Cricket Club was the perfect venue for a lovely afternoon of cricket. The Colts Bs were excited to play, and the fixture did not disappoint in any way. Pilgrims’ won the toss and elected to field. Wickets fell slowly, which gave Westbourne House the opportunity to get onto the board fairly quickly. Some loose deliveries (to be expected early in the season) saw some easy runs collected by way of extras. Westbourne House was able to post a commendable 107/4 in the allotted 20 overs. Neil C, Tristan S and George S took a wicket each.
The Pilgrims’ chase was steady, and at no point did it look like the game would get beyond them. Some positive contributions from James P (9) and Tristan S (7) aided the cause, but it was ‘Extras’ who supplied the highest number of runs. The Colts Bs replied with 105/9 in what proved to be a most absorbing match.
This is a very positive start for the Bs, and I look forward to watching them improve as the season progresses. CXC
Foals A v Westbourne House
Pilgrims' 89-8
Westbourne House 90-8
Pilgrims' lost by 2 wickets
A great first match out of the season. We batted first, and the lads played well to see out the 20 overs against some good bowling. We were helped by wides, but the boys stuck at it. A great initiation.
In reply, Westbourne House had one batsman who scored a lot of runs, but we did well to get him out and peg the score back. Nine bowlers made Westbourne toil for the win, as it tight towards the end. Six bowlers took wickets.
A great first match and the boys learnt an awful lot. Everyone contributed and they played with fine spirit. Special mention must be made of Charles N for great keeping in his first match in that role. MDS
Foals B V Westbourne House
Pilgrims' 179 for 4
Westbourne House 208 for 2
Pilgrims' Lost by 29 runs
A great first pairs match where all boys made contributions to the game with both bat and ball. Top scorers were Rupert and Elijah and some lovely shots played by Timothy, Leo and Tommy. Ike and James bowled well in the opening overs and also at the ‘death’, and the first wickets of the season were picked up by Rupert (LBW) and Tommy (bowled). All in all, a very encouraging opening match and I hope the boys are looking forward to the rest of the season as much as I am. CAL.
Match reports from Saturday 7 May
1st XI v Moulsford
25 Over Match
Pilgrims’ Won by 2 Runs
Pilgrims’ 139-5 Ollie M 73*
Moulsford 137-6
This game had it all; classy batting, athletic fielding, leg spin bowling and an incredibly tight finish. Batting first, Guy P (11) and Ollie M (73* retired) put on 47 from 8 overs to lay the foundations for a good total. Ollie was the only batsman to show any fluency as he continued to punish anything slightly off-line or length. He was supported by new batsmen as they came and went. George C, Thomas R and Harrison K all perishing to the excellent leg spinner. Teddy M swashbuckled a quick 10 at the end to help Pilgrims’ reach 139-5.
Moulsford’s openers were pinned down by George C’s accurate bowling (five runs from his first three overs). James Z also kept the pressure on at the other end with some tasty deliveries. Lawrie S made the breakthrough in the eighth over, clean bowling the opener for 11. The other opener accelerated his scoring as Moulsford maintained their target run rate keeping the pressure on the bowling side. We picked up a couple of run-outs through excellent composure under pressure in the field, however, it seemed to be drifting away from us as the left-handed opener continue to strike boundaries. Then a bit of magic from George C on the boundary, as he plucked a one-handed catch from high over his head to dismiss the danger man for 60. Moulsford still required 30 from 5 overs, which became 12 from 2. Such pressure on batters and bowlers alike. Nine needed from the final over, George stepped up and yorked the batsman first ball, a few scrambled runs later saw Pilgrims’ prevent Moulsford from getting 140 to win as they finished three runs short of victory. George, Ollie and Silas K were the pick of the bowlers for their economy of under five runs per over. A great game of cricket that had all spectators enthralled to the very last ball. AW
2nd XI v FSM
20 overs
Pilgrims’ 123 for 3 (Rory K 31 ret, Jinmo K 32)
FSM 32 for 7 (Nikhil D 1-2, Mayin D 0-3)
Pilgrims’ won by 91 runs
The 2nd XI travelled to Princes Mead School for our ‘home’ fixture against Forres Sandle Manor; we are hugely grateful to PM for loaning us their pitch. It was a very good performance from the boys. Put into bat, Henry S (10) and Rory K (31ret) gave us a solid start. A well-paced innings saw us at 48 for 1 at the halfway mark, but accelerate in the second half to make 139 (assisted by Jinmo K’s 32 ret).
The FSM chase struggled to get going, with our bowling excellent, and the fielding sharp too. The pick of the bowlers were Nikhil D with 2 wickets for one run from three overs, and an incredible spell from Mayin D, bowling for maidens in a row, whilst taking 3 wickets. We are unable to grab all the wickets, as we had challenged ourselves to do, but it was still an excellent performance in the field nonetheless. ASD
4th XI v FSM
20 overs
Pilgrims’ 123 for 5 (Theo S 32*)
FSM 43 all out (Monty W 1-1 Alex H 4-2, Rufus B 5-2)
Pilgrims’ won by 80 runs
The 4th XI travelled to FSM near Fordingbridge. Losing the toss, they were put into bat. Theo S got the team’s score rolling with 32* including four 4s. Those that followed him added modestly to the score in amongst a dearth of extras. At tea, FSM knew they were chasing 124 to win.
In the field, the 4ths played it tight. There were two run-outs – Matteo L and Alex H, Monty W took two catches from Alex H’s and Theo S’s bowling, Chris H managed a stumping and Rufus B finds himself poised on a hat-trick having ended the match with two wickets in two balls, the second of which was a lovely caught and bowled. Amongst the wickets, the 4ths played well as a team and stifled FSM’s progress by stopping the quick single. The players will have been happy with this performance – there was much to be pleased with. AJS

The 4th XI at FSM
Colts A v FSM
20 overs
FSM 105 all out from 18.2 overs (Yan Z 2-1; Aditya S 2-7; Ben A 2-11)
Pilgrims’ 107/3 from 19.3 overs (Barnaby D 29*, Olly P 15*)
Pilgrims’ won by 7 wickets
The Colts A were on particularly lively form whilst in the field, but unfortunately their energy did not translate to consistent fielding. Far too many balls sneaked through to the boundary, with some elementary catches also being put down. Each fielder bowled two overs each with most nabbing a wicket, especially Yan who almost nicked a hat-trick and Ben A who snared two, too. FSM lost wickets at regular intervals, but posting over 100 was a good target to chase. The batting order was re-jigged to give more players an opportunity out on the square, but despite some quality running between the wickets, Pilgrims’ found the going slow, with far to dot balls. With a score at 46/1, from 12 overs, and with the run rate always rising, one sensed FSM began to think a victory was likely, but some powerful striking from Olly saw the team over the final hurdle with three balls to spare, much to the delight of the Colts but also the strong crowd gathered. Pilgrims’ U9 A v Farleigh U9 Pairs Match
Pilgrims’ 222 v Farleigh 353
Farleigh won by 131
It was a beautiful afternoon to kick the 2022 season off with. Despite losing the toss and being put in to bat, there was a great sense of excitement throughout the team. Our opening pair looked extremely solid. Runs where hard to come by during our innings, yet, the boys dug in and did manage to capitalise on some of the looser deliveries. Elliot N looked relaxed at the crease, timing the ball well. Farleigh, to their credit fielded extremely well. They took 6 catches in their attempt to reduce our team total. Patrick B and Theo W lead our bowling attack, offering little for the opposition. Farleigh batted sensibly, running well between the wickets and hitting the gaps. A tough start, some lessons to be learnt but many positives to take forward. MTG
Farleigh U9B 323 v Pilgrims’ U9 Sandstorm 150 (both teams started on 200)
Farleigh U9B won by 73 runs
In glorious sunshine the U9B team took part in their first cricket match of the season. The excitement amongst the boys was clear to see, and despite the result all the boys enjoyed themselves. Having lost the toss, we were put into bat, and we tentatively achieved 50 runs. The boys showed a lack of confidence when batting, except for Edward D, Davis G, and Freddie W all of whom tried to hit the ball and scored some runs.
Harry C was the standout bowler in the second innings, sending accurate deliveries down to the opposition and giving away very few extras. All the boys remained focussed in the field, showing an eagerness keep the oppositions score to a minimum.
Unfortunately, Farleigh were too strong on the day and won by 73 runs. Plenty for the boys to work on in the coming weeks. TMH
Pilgrims’ U9 Seawolves v Farleigh
Pilgrims' played their first game of the season in great spirit; not only that, but they also demonstrated enormous potential with their cricket and at times produced some excellent play. Opening the batting were Eddie Q and Rufus M. A solid start saw our pairs follow suit with some good scoring. Ralph M and Finn S scoring particularly well. A score of 60 runs was a good effort. Farleigh then came into bat, and they too scored well. Pilgrims' fielded with good concentration, but some wayward bowling gifted the opposition some vital runs which would inevitably give them the victory. JB
