To be a Pilgrim … is to be prepared, Episode 10
To be a Pilgrim … is to be prepared, Episode 10
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appears.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
We teach Pilgrims always to be prepared. They know that preparation is a very important key to success in exams, fixtures, performances, and life. “Be prepared” is the motto of the Scouts, originating from Robert Baden-Powell’s explanation in his book Scouting for Boys: “You are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty”. We have just entered Advent - a time of preparation.
On Saturday 28 November at 1730 I had the best seat in Winchester, nay the world, when we celebrated the beginning of the season of Advent with the Advent Procession in the Cathedral. I had to pinch myself on several occasions. Was this really happening? What a privilege! As the national lockdown was still in force, the congregation was watching online from all over the country and the world.
Dean Catherine offered the Welcome and the Bidding prayer. The impact of light spreading out from the darkness and through the Cathedral as an array of candles on the floor were lit in sequence was inspiring. The procession moved slowly from the West end to the High Altar as the Dean and clergy, the Bishops of Winchester, Basingstoke and Southampton, the lay clerks and the (our!) choristers sang the Antiphons, an anthem (A Tender Shoot) by Otto Goldschmidt and the evocative Advent carol, O come, O come, Emmanuel, which perfectly represents the church’s cry during the Advent season. (I enjoyed it so much I sang it twice through when I got home as I watched the service back on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel.) I was invited to read the second lesson, and following William H, who read the first lesson so clearly and movingly, was a hard act. Well done, boys! What a beautiful service to begin the season of Advent, one which is full of preparation for the birth of Jesus and expectation as we look for the return of Christ in glory to consummate his eternal kingdom.
On Wednesday, Nathaniel B (the youngest chorister) had the honour of hitting the switch to light the Cathedral’s Christmas tree (including the star on the top) in the annual short tree-lighting service. Dean Catherine reminded us all that even though the world feels a little unusual at the moment, Christmas IS coming. The press were in attendance and we have some wonderful pictures of our own (see below). My favourite moment was when one Chorister began to sing Panis Angelicus and the rest, who were by this time spread all over the Cathedral (some getting dizzy spinning circles in their red vestments - see picture below), spontaneously joined in - the Cathedral was filled with the most amazing sound.
The Quiristers sang evensong at Winchester Cathedral on 26 November and at the College last night. Due to regulations, there were no congregations and also no Pilgrims’ staff in attendance. Such a shame. They sang beautifully on both occasions by all accounts and are very much looking forward to their next service. Mr Ionascu popped into school briefly last week, and it was so wonderful to see him looking so well. We are very grateful for the super work Mr Cunningham has been doing – the Quiristers have not skipped a beat (no pun intended) while Mr Ionascu has been away. We are very much looking forward to hearing their recording from Abbey Road last month - how often do boys get the opportunity to record in those famous studios? Their A Winter's Night CD is now available at Cornflowers and online (see below).
And to return to service as I wrote about in a previous episode of To be a Pilgrim. Ben H, Chair of the Charity Committee, along with Alberto G, Sebastian F, James K and Shane S launch below the Pilgrims’ 365 Challenge. The idea is that boys and their families will run an accumulative 365 Km or more before the end of the year raising money for Allegra’s Ambition, a wonderful charity to help children get active which Ben has a personal connection with through his family. The boys pitched the idea to me in my study at break earlier this week. They were so compelling, passionate and organised that of course the answer was, “Yes, please!” Well done, boys! I encourage all boys and their families to take part whether in the UK or further afield (running together is safe and great fun), donate a £ per Km ran and send in video as Ben describes below. Get fitter and help others. I suggest we also make a compilation of photos for the newsletter. We will let you know where to send photos to. With many thanks to Miss Erasmus and Mrs Goodthwaite for their help.
Finally, today the boys and staff are wearing Christmas jumpers in support of the Salvation Army's appeal to provide toys for children at Christmas. Our thanks go to Dr Noble and the PPA for organising the day. What a jolly sight it was in the Yard and Grid this morning as boys excitedly compared their jumpers (and their teachers’ jumpers). Who was wearing what this year? The jumpers have added to the fun and excitement as we have all enjoyed Christmas lunch with crackers and squash. Enormous and heartfelt thanks to Mrs Razza and her team for feeding us so heartily, healthily, and deliciously, today and every day!
I wish you a very happy weekend and all the best for the last (half) week of term.

The Quiristers and Winchester College Choir release a new album for Christmas
An ethereal album of Christmas music by Winchester College Chapel Choir has been released. The Chapel Choir recorded the album in early January 2020 over 3 days, in the inspiring surroundings of Merton College Chapel in Oxford. They were accompanied by Onyx Brass, a professional ensemble. They sang and recorded for up to seven hours a day, and learned about production and recording processes as well.
A Winter’s Night features a selection of classics including ‘Ding dong! Merrily on High’, ‘Hark the Herald’ and ‘I saw three ships’. The perfect gift for stocking, gifts or home whilst decorating the Christmas tree!
Available for download and purchase here, or at Cornflowers Gift Shop.

Scenes from around school this week as Christmas preparations are underway. Streamers to decorate classrooms are being made during break times, card making in commoners; there’s a stable in the Pre-Prep, trees and lights are everywhere, dorms are decorated, there’s even an Elf on a Shelf!
And we have all enjoyed Christmas Jumper Day.

PPA Report - Wreath making event
On Wednesday some Pilgrims' parents gathered together on Zoom to be taught how to make a Christmas wreath by Judith Searles from Little and Bloom florists.
An hour and a half of wreath making, drinking coffee, and girly chats made a great start to the Christmas decorating!
We all produced something that we could proudly hang on our front doors. Plans are afoot for more floral creativity next term.

COVID-19 Update
We thought it might be useful to do a weekly roundup of any COVID-19 related developments at Pilgrims'. We rejoiced that we saw the end of the national lockdown this week and are delighted to report that there are no positive cases of COVID-19 in our school currently, with a flurry of PCR tests undertaken by those flying home following immigration regulations. We have been working in partnership with The Walcott Practice and have been delighted by their level of service and care of our boys.
At the end of the national lockdown, our protocols in school remain unchanged as we move into Tier 2. We are fully compliant with government regulations, enhanced even by the addition of our new foot pump hand washing and sanitiser stations.
Many thanks to all boys, staff, and parents for their ongoing support, compliance, and vigilance.

The Sky at Night
December 4 onward: Jupiter and Saturn – and the Great Conjunction!
Many boys have enjoyed looking through the telescope at the two largest planets in the solar system. Jupiter is bright in the early evening in the South West, and through the telescope, it appears as a small circle, with dark and light patches and with its four moons lined up beyond it. Saturn is dimmer and to Jupiter’s east, and the boys have been thrilled to see it. Yes, the view is a bit blurred because there is so much atmosphere to look through, but a glimpse of the rings is always something special.
Well, just before Christmas, we are in for a rare treat as Jupiter and Saturn come so close to each other that they will almost look like a single shining planet in the sky an hour after sunset on December 21. This Great Conjunction happens once every twenty years or so, but this year they will appear the closest they have been since 1623.
Do not miss this!

Artwork of the Week
The Pilgrims' Scallop Shell by Jaden P
I do try and use this platform as democratically as possible, so it is with some trepidation that I promote the same artist for two weeks running! Last week, I showed you Jaden's self-portrait which he created in lesson time with the boys of 7S under strict technical restrictions or handicaps. It was on the strength of that work that I then commissioned Jaden to draw the Pilgrims' scallop shell for the school's new set of promotional photographs which were taken this past Monday.
We were overjoyed to see what Jaden produced over the weekend in a medium (charcoal) he had never used before. As a result, I have nominated Jaden for a Head's Show Up and have awarded him Artwork of the Week for the second week in a row. And although these honours are for Jaden, I believe his ''can-do'' attitude to the commission is part of the fabric of this school. He is not alone in this regard. I could have asked half a dozen boys to do the same thing and they would have all responded: "Yes, Sir!" Thank you, Jaden, and thank you, Pilgrims' boys.

Staff news
After almost 40 years of teaching in Hampshire, Mike Buckett retires at the end of this term. Mike came to Winchester to train at King Alfred’s College in 1976. After graduating in 1980 he took his first teaching post in Colchester. He returned to teach PE and Maths at Perins School in Alresford in 1983. After a number of years there, he gained a promotion to Head of boys’ PE at Hounsdown School in Totton, where he then became Head of the PE department. At this time he met a certain Andrew Short who arrived at Hounsdown School as Mike''s second in department. After spending 2001 in Australia on a teacher exchange programme, in Albury, Wodonga on the NSW/Victoria border, he returned to England and landed the job as Director of Sport here at Pilgrims’ in 2002.
When an opportunity arose for a second in department at Pilgrims’ he contacted Andrew Short to suggest that he apply .......... the rest is history as they say.
After more than ten years leading Sport at Pilgrims'', Mike handed over the reins to Andrew Short some years later and carved out an illustrious career for himself as a respected and distinctive Maths teacher, much loved and appreciated by boys and parents alike.
Those who have read the Hampshire Chronicle for years will remember that Mike used to grace the back pages regularly as the number one goal scorer for Winchester Castle back in the late '80's and early '90's.
Mike has some wonderful retirement plans: to walk many of the UK’s long routes, get a dog, play lots of golf, tour Australia with his son, take a Nile cruise to the Valley of Kings, to enjoy a Hampshire Cricket membership and a season ticket to Southampton FC.
Thank you, Mike, you will be greatly missed at Pilgrims’. Have a wonderful retirement!
Alex Judd also leaves us this week, bringing to an end a long association with Pilgrims’ in many guises. Firstly, as a Chorister parent, then Teaching Assistant, Reception French teacher, Pre-Prep class teacher and Forest School leader.
In her time at Pilgrims', Alex has developed the Forest School programme and really embedded the outdoor learning into the main curriculum. She brings such knowledge, joy, and energy to every session. The children who are fortunate enough to have been part of these sessions over the years have learned real-life skills. They can safely and independently use real tools such as saws and knives, they can light fires, and cook marshmallows! They have a deep understanding of our environment and how to care for it. Skills which will equip these children well in the future as protecting our environment becomes ever more critical.
Alex will be leaving us to join her husband, who is living and working in France. She plans to continue working with children and teaching when she arrives there.
Thank you, Alex, for all you have given to Pilgrims'; you will be greatly missed.

The Pilgrims' End of Year Charity Run - from Ben Hardman
The charity committee and I, over the last few weeks, have been setting up a challenge that all the boys, staff, and family members can take part in even during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The event is the Pilgrims 365 challenge! The goal is to run 365 kilometres as a school before the end of 2020. This is for Allegra’s Ambition: a charity that encourages people to get active and have fun.
We have set up a Virgin Giving page for the donations and we suggest that for every kilometre you run you should donate one pound (rounded up to the nearest pound). For example, if you run a 5k you should donate five pounds. This means we can have a pretty accurate account of how well we are doing. We also ask you to take a photo or video of you running because I am making a video of the entire project.
I really encourage all of you to take part because the charity we are working with is absolutely fantastic and every donation will mean so much to them. So please put on your trainers and work off some of those mince pies all for a good cause.
If any boy has a question come and find one of the following: Ben H, Alberto G, Sebastian F, James K, or Shane S in Year 8, or please see Miss Erasmus or Mrs Goodthwaite.
Happy Christmas everyone!
Ben H, Chairman of the Charity Committee.
For parents:
For the boys to upload their photos and videos, please go to to Microsoft Teams at teams.microsoft.com and ask them to sign in with their school email address.
In the Charity Run team they will see a Files tab. Anyone with a Pilgrims' School account can upload files using this link.
Caveat: You should only upload photos if you are happy for these to be shared amongst the school community and be distributed in future newsletters’.

The Juniors enjoy an in-house Theatre Trip!
Usually, at the end of the Christmas Term, the Junior boys excitedly board a coach and make their way to a local theatre for a Christmassy treat. With this not being an option this year, we still wanted to mark the end of the term and reward the boys for all their hard work in as similar way as possible.
Therefore we created a ‘Theatre Trip’ in school! With no less excitement than last year, possibly due to the popcorn, haribos, and hot chocolate on offer, the boys happily settled into their end of term treat – watching Shrek, The Musical! With boys watching the performance in their year group bubbles, it wasn’t quite the same as celebrating the end of term together as a department, or at an actual theatre, but a great time was had by all!

From the Base - Top tips for a Wellness Christmas
Everyone loves a list at Christmas. Here are some hard-fought ideas for making Christmas better for the whole family:
1) Spend time BEING rather doing. Avoid the feeling to always be doing something, especially on Christmas day. Enjoy just being in the moment.
2) Use the 80/20 rule. Rather than thinking we should eat healthily 100% of the time (and then the associated guilt when we don't), do enjoy choosing your food, balanced with good choices over the next few weeks. I personally eat really well in the run-up to Christmas and enjoy the indulgences even more because of it.
3) Get outside and enjoy the magic. The quiet streets, the misty views, the muddy paths, the fresh air. All enhance the mood and are good for the soul.
4) Give more than you receive. Not gifts, but rather time and affection. Lavish it upon whoever you are with.
5) Change up your habits. Try not to do the same things you do all year long. Get up late/early, have breakfast in bed, don't watch the news, put a DVD on for the whole family. Just mix it up, make the holidays feel different.
6) Conflict is okay. Families disagree, even at Christmas. Just remember what is important - letting things go sometimes is liberating.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Year 1
Christmas is in the air in the Year 1 classroom! This week, the boys have written beautiful Christmas acrostic poems, created Christmas pictures using 2D shapes, and enjoyed a number of other festive activities. Nativity rehearsals are in full swing in preparation for staging like no other. The boys have astounded me with their sensible attitudes towards performing on camera and many have done an amazing job of practising their lines. Our Elf on the Shelf is also back and every morning it is a joy to see the boys' excitement as they discover what the Elf has been up to in the night!

Forest School
Our final Forest School week culminated in the Year 1 class perfecting their tool safety. Sticks were lopped and whittled, marshmallows toasted, and s'mores devoured.
The boys also worked together to rebuild the Pilgrims' Bug Hotel ready for any minibeasts to move in for the winter. A slug community has already taken up residence!
Years R and 2 had slightly wetter sessions, but still managed to enjoy themselves as they made stick patterns in the mud, splashed through countless puddles, and slid down some slippery slopes!
